Japan Tsunami

The massive earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March have caused widespread destruction and suffering, relayed on television screens around the world.

More than 8,000 people have died in the disaster, thousands are injured and at least 12,000 are missing. Many people are living in evacuation centres as 14,000 homes have been destroyed and around 100,000 are damaged.

Our supporters have responded to this situation with huge generosity and solidarity in their donations to the Japan Tsunami Appeal. We are extremely grateful for and humbled by their support. Thank you to everyone who has given.

The Japanese Red Cross has been on the ground since the disaster began and has sent 230 response teams to provide first aid and emergency healthcare, as well as distributing relief items. The teams are made up of more than 1,200 staff, including doctors and nurses.

The costs of the relief effort, and of rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected, will be immense. Donations to the British Red Cross will be used towards helping the Japanese people recover from this devastating natural disaster over the coming months and years.

In the event that we receive more donations to the Japan Tsunami Appeal than the Japanese Red Cross and International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement can reasonably and efficiently spend, any surplus funds will be used to help us prepare for and respond to humanitarian disasters both here in the UK and overseas.

Please buy a shirt and donate all the profits to helping those affected by the Earth-quakes and Tsunami in Japan. Show your support for the people who are trying to come to terms with this event today and will struggle for some time to rebuild their lives. Many cities and people will never be the same again and everything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

This is not a charity website but is a not-for-profit group of petrol head enthusiasts and others coming together to help raise money and to show we care. As well as ordering a shirt you can donate and all of this money will go to help.

Once the shop has achieved its goal a donation will be given to charity. The money will be split equally between the local Red Cross association, as that is the preferred charity of some of the Japanese motor manufacturers and also local charities ‘on the ground’ in Japan.  These local charities will be chosen in association with our contacts and supporters in Japan and approved by auditors before any money is sent.

Mugen CRZ

THE HOTTEST HYBRID YET

MUGEN EURO to build high-performance Honda CR-Z

Mugen CRZ Prototype

MUGEN Euro is developing a highly-tuned version of Honda’s CR-Z, which will deliver “Type R-like” performance from the hybrid’s petrol-electric powertrain – and may offer even better fuel economy.

This faster, more powerful car will make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

The CR-Z MUGEN will feature enhancements to both the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine and the Honda IMA system to boost power and torque, while bespoke brakes and suspension will be fitted to improve the chassis dynamics.

The major engine changes, and those made to exhaust and induction, may even result in greater mpg and lower CO2 emissions during some conditions. However, at this early development stage, final power, torque and fuel economy figures are not yet known.

Lightweight components, including a carbon fibre bonnet, will be employed to lower the overall weight, and the car will use MUGEN alloy wheels to reduce unsprung mass.

To improve aerodynamics and give the car an even more sporting look, MUGEN body parts will be added, including front and rear bumpers, and a spoiler.

“We wanted to extend the performance of the CR-Z,” says Hiro Toyoda of MUGEN Euro. “It is already a fun car to drive, with an excellent chassis, but we thought that with more power and enhanced torque delivery it could be even more exciting. However, as with all MUGEN projects, we have stayed true to the Honda design and philosophy, and the electric motor is still a vital ingredient to boost performance and economy.”

Mugen CRZ Prototype

The CR-Z MUGEN is a joint project between Honda (UK) and MUGEN Euro – the Northampton-based subsidiary of Honda’s long standing tuning partner MUGEN. In 2009, MUGEN Euro produced the Civic Type R MUGEN, an extreme, 240PS version of Honda popular hot hatch.

“This will be one quick hybrid,” says Martin Moll, Head of Marketing for Honda (UK). “With more torque, more power and MUGEN’s experience of working with Honda cars, we’re expecting great things. It promises to show how hybrid cars can be even more exciting to drive.”

At this stage, the CR-Z MUGEN is being developed purely as a one-off prototype, with no plans for a production version.

Car of the month (March 2010)

Owner?
Ben (gobbledygook)

Time owned?
Since bought new in April 2003.

Why did you choose a Type R?
I tested all the good hot hatches that were available in 2003 and the CTR put the biggest smile on my face. Bullet proof reliability was important to me, so a Honda was an obvious choice. The CTR was cheaper than anything faster and faster than anything cheaper, so I was getting value for money. But the car I was after didn't just have to be quick; it had to be fun too. The high revving engine and vtec kick together with really sharp handling just made it the most fun car to drive that I could afford.

Tell us about your modifications?
Before I started modding the car, I knew it had to be a compromise, so while people might think I should have done this, that or the other, my aim was for a car that was happy on the road, fun on the track and half decent on the drag strip, but kept luxuries like air con and could fit a weekends camping gear or a full tesco trolley of shopping in the boot. I also wanted to do as much work as possible myself, as that's half the fun as far as I am concerned.
My first mod was a crappy plastic battery cover. I don’t remember why I fitted it, but I still have it on today! Not a very promising start, but I quickly moved on from there. I spent a bit of time running naturally aspirated with a Mugen airbox and exhaust, but then decided more power was needed quickly, so I fitted a Wizards of Nos dry nitrous kit.
Eventually even this became a bit dull and I accidentally bought a Jackson Racing supercharger on eBay, which together with the nitrous gave me 350bhp. I stuck with that for a while before turning to a major project of rebuilding and forging an engine to make it suitable for a big power Rotrex supercharger setup.

Do you have any future plans for the car?
There’s still a bit of fine tuning to be done. With a few relatively simple mods under the bonnet I should be able to free up a bit more power, I might even break the 500bhp mark. The suspension setup also needs to be tuned. I’ll be playing with different ARB and toe settings to get the handling how I like it over the next couple of years. Other than that, and fixing anything that breaks, it’s finished, unless I get bored and decide to swap the charger for a big turbo one day……

EK9

August 1997: The EK9 Civic Type-R is launched in Japan. It is powered by an exclusively-developed 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC B16B engine that makes 185 bhp at 8,200 rpm.

The lightweight B16B engine features a new valve system allowing higher engine speeds, reduced engine friction, improved breathing, and increased compression ratio.

Main features of handling include increased body rigidity, reduced weight, sports suspension, torque-sensitive helical LSD, sports-tuned ABS, and Bridgestone Potenza RE010 tires.

The Civic Type R models were preceded by the 1990-1991 EF8 CRX SiR and the 1992-1995 EG6 SiR-II. The 1990-1991 Civic CRX SiR was the first Civic ever to utilize the potent B16A engine and an optional LSD, and with a stripped out interior devoid of optional luxuries such as power windows, A/C and power steering, they proved to be quite a quick hatch.

This inaugural top-of-the range Civic marked Honda’s successes in Formula One, with multiple Constructor’s Championships with the Marlboro McLaren team.

The latter EG6 SiR-II used the same stripped out formula, with a 10 hp (7 kW) hike for the B16A engine and a marginally stiffer chassis, this time in a larger heavier body shell.

The 1998 EK9 Civic was the first to be given the Type R badge. It featured a Type R prepared B16B engine producing 185 PS (182 hp), Helical LSD, stiffer chassis, upgraded sway bars and strut bars, Recaro alcantara seats, 15″ alloy wheels and a large boot spoiler. Since then, most generations have offered a Type R variant. The Type R version of the Civic has never been sold in the U.S.

Why did you choose a Type R?

I was looking for a new car to replace my aging Peugeot 205 GTi. It had to be a hatchback due to carrying equipment round as part of my job at the time. I test drove all the contenders available – the Audi S3 was a totally inert chassis and dull but very well put together, the Mini Cooper was a hoot to handle but the interior was a bit of a let down and the boot space was ridiculously small. The Leon Cupra R 225 really caught my eye but again the chassis was a bit of a let down. My other half already had a Renault Clio 172 and although I quite fancied a Cup, it was silly to both own the same car.

The Golf GTi mk5 was shown in 2003 but didn't come out until September 2004 so I decided to wait for it. Then a mate of mine phoned me up all excited because he had just picked up a new r30th AE Civic Type R in Satin Silver. Well I'd not really given the Civic much consideration to be honest, but after he took me out in it for a couple of hours I was absolutely smitten with the revvy nature of the engine and N/A technology. Within a few days I had booked a test drive and there and then I put down a deposit. Within a month a NHB facelift model had come into Barretts of Canterbury so I took it and haven't looked back since.

Tell us about your modifications?

Whilst waiting for the car I had been browsing the CTRO movie clips section and had seen a video Trung had posted with a GruppeM and Spoon N1 exhaust system. That was it for me. Within 4 weeks of owning it, I had completely ruined the warranty and had a GruppeM and Spoon N1 catback fitted by Guy Chamberlain at CPL Racing and then about a month later I was back at CPL having a KPro fitted. It kind of snowballed from there.

Do you have any future plans for the car?

I would eventually like to get round to fitting a big brake kit such as AP Racing, Stoptech or Brembo. Other than that I am happy with the car as it is, although I am looking longingly at Bride seats on VTECDirect.com these days.

FN2 GT Mugen Edition

CHAMPIONSHIP WHITE CIVIC TYPE R 2.0 MUGEN i-VTEC MANUAL

MUGEN EURO CONFIRMS PRODUCTION OF ULTIMATE CIVIC TYPE R

MUGEN Euro has confirmed a limited production run of the Civic Type R MUGEN, following huge interest in the concept version from the UK and overseas.

An exclusive run of up to 20 cars will be hand-built in the UK by MUGEN, the long-standing tuner of Honda engines for motor racing. Production of the road-legal super hatch will take place at MUGEN Euro, based in Northampton – with customers receiving a unique, involved experience during the build process of each car.

Using over 20 years of experience and engineering expertise gained at the forefront of global motorsport, engineers from MUGEN in Japan and Europe analysed every component of the Swindon-built 3-door Civic Type R – before developing one of the quickest normally-aspirated front drive cars in the world.

“Each Type R MUGEN will be an exclusive, hand-built race car for the road,” says Hiroki Toyoda, Vice President of MUGEN EURO. “When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes. Given the interest we have already had from car enthusiasts in the UK and abroad, we hope to repeat that achievement.”

Race engine for the road
The 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine is the first to reap the benefits of MUGEN’s time in Formula 1 and GT racing, as well as hundreds of development hours and testing time with the Honda K20A engine on the world-class MUGEN engine dyno. New camshafts and a modified intake system increase power by 20 per cent to 240PS, and boost torque by 10 per cent throughout the rev range. A change of pistons also helps by increasing the compression ratio, and breathing is enhanced by fitting a custom stainless steel exhaust system and MUGEN airbox. Meanwhile, a bespoke MUGEN map for the ECU allows the engine to take full advantage of the modifications.

“MUGEN engineers pay incredible attention to detail, often measuring to one thousandth of a millimetre when tuning and rebuilding an engine, and this process typically takes approximately seven days of work,” says Hiroki Toyoda.

“When our engineers aren’t building customer engines, they are at circuits with top level race and rally teams helping to manage and prepare race engines. We are very proud to bring our motorsport experience to the road with this high performance Honda engine, the very first time that a MUGEN-tuned engine has ever been offered for use on the road in the UK.”

The extra power of the tuned engine is transferred to road or track via a limited slip differential, and grip and handling are also significantly improved through a completely revised suspension set-up, with custom-made springs and dampers employed.

Improving the stopping power are bespoke four-piston mono-block racing brake callipers, which sit under high-density, lightweight forged alloy wheels. These weigh just 7.85kg each (32 per cent less than the production wheel), contributing to a significant reduction in unsprung weight.

Integrated style
MUGEN was keen to amend the already-aggressive original styling of the Civic Type R with modifications that are integrated. A large wing adorns the back of the car, and plays a role in increasing downforce at speed, to improve stability. Other measures to improve the car’s overall aero efficiency include replacing front and rear skirts with high-quality composite items. At the front, a new grille wearing the MUGEN emblem enhances the nose.

Every Civic Type R MUGEN will be painted in Honda’s famous Championship White – the traditional racing colour of the brand, in which its first Formula 1 car was painted back in 1964. To authenticate the car’s exclusivity each will wear a special badge inside on the centre console, listing the serial number of each unique model.

To make the ultimate Type R even more extreme, particularly for circuit use, MUGEN is offering an optional ‘Track Pack’. This package includes front Recaro seats, removal of the rear seat bench with a composite blanking panel fitted to reduce weight, water and oil temperature/pressure gauges, data recording equipment, and track-ready road-legal tyres.

Concept development
While early engineering and development was carried out by MUGEN in Japan, a considerable amount of time has been spent honing the car for UK conditions. Engineers from the UK and Japan carried out 36 hours of suspension testing on 2200km of British roads during September, to further tune the set-up. In addition, MUGEN’s engine specialists adjusted ECU mapping and throttle response – and a new exhaust system was fitted to improve resonance. Plus, the team worked on brake feel, seeing a 30 per cent improvement after three days of testing.

The production model has also benefitted from feedback gathered from UK media, and Type R enthusiasts in the UK. This information was fed into the development process and helped decide the final spec of the 20 production units.

Price confirmed
MUGEN Euro has set the price for the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN at £38,599 OTR.

This price includes an unparalleled purchasing experience, which involves direct contact with MUGEN engineers throughout the car’s build. This will be a package tailored to individual customers – similar to the service offered when buying a racing car. Each of the Type Rs will be built to the customer’s exact specification, including their choice of options. Even ECU mapping can be adjusted to suit specific customer tastes or driving style.

The price also takes into account MUGEN racing engine building expertise and heritage. Put it into context, MUGEN would typically charge around £165,000 + VAT for a full racing Type R, with the engine costing about 10 per cent of this price. Only a select few have had the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Honda-MUGEN, and even fewer have owned one, so this is an extremely unique opportunity.
