Here's the graphs :stfu:

Evo360 wrote:A trip to TDi north for a dyno run or two. The idea being to get a base figure before I ordered my Kpro. I also had the idea of testing the K+N against a hondata modified airbox. here are the graphs, a bit hard to see but here they are:

So this is the better of the two. 216bhp with healthy torque figures too. Guess what, this is the modded airbox run

heres the graph showing the results of the K+N typhoon. 212bhp and noticable drop in torque too. We ran this a few times and the results got worse and worse due to heat soak.

So all in all good gains with a cat back and modded airbox. This spurred me on to order the kpro, but without the funds for an RBC or exhaust header there wasnt much point so the plans went on hold for a while.

Good technical test I must say though do you really notice 1bhp??

Honestly intakes on these Honda forums seem a bit of an obsession with people, it comes down to what the driver wants, OEM Hondata mod seems good for a little more response and no real noise improvement,

I have the hated typhoon purely as it was cheap and all I want is to hear the crossover, I don't track it or have kpro or anything, had enough off modding cars extensively. Honestly for me Tegiwa thing £340 seems loads for anyone just driving down the street or motorway journey, unless of course you have cash to burn.

All the other £200+ ones again will surely help with the kpro etc at the lower end if you want noise cheaply and loose 1bhp and a bit higher revs for about £60 I don't understand all the hang ups, not everyone's meant to have the same that would be boring.

Yeah you should ultimately go for what you like and not get pushed into everyone's opinion all the time, I could easily sit here and go yeah mate get the tegiwa it's awesome sound and a bit extra performence, and the poor guy goes out spends £340 which is a lot to most and only drives 10 miles a day.

I would have a tegiwa if it wasn't £340 but for what it's worth and driving I do no point you can't beat the sound of twin webber 45s anyhow :))

I have also heard this a few times guys
Went on three different rollers with the S14a, TDi North was one of em and same results as other two more or less, only 1 or 2 bhp difference

Evo360 wrote:Thanks to Ben and Neil at tdi north today, we had a bit of an experient using my ep3 and came up with some interesting conclusions

My car has a trust cat back and nothing else, no header or manifold or kpro/k100
all runs were conducted with the bonnet shut
We had two runs using a modified oem airbox and oem air filter

Run 1. 216bhp at around 6800rpm
Run 2. 217bhp at around 6900rpm

The next two runs were using a three month old typhoon kit which had covered around 1500 miles tops

Run 1. 215bhp at around 7500rpm
Run 2. 212bhp at around 7900rpm

So you can see definitively with the cone filter, the car is losing chunks of power. I think if we'd done more runs with the cone the figures would have steadily worsened.

Ben couldn't email me the graphs because he had no memory stick but he's sending them to me tomorrow so I will post them up.

I have argued for the k+n in the past so it's been a placebo effect kicking in because of the noise levels and the feeling of a much more aggressive crossover. The aggressive crossover is in effect because the car was running poorly low down which accentuates the 'on cam' feel of the car

I still love the k+n for the sound track but guess what, the oem box is back on and k+n is shortly going up for sale. Like I said, can't be beaten for sound but if your chasing figures then it's no good

Discuss :shouldbeinteresting:
Ok so after the car did two runs basically in stock form apart from cat back:

Q1: why didnt you do the runs on different days ??? After the 1st few runs the engine bay temps would have been quite high!!

Q2: Do you think that was a fair test???? we know these cone kits are always better off on the move!!! Hense why after sitting in traffic tooo long they seen to behave sluggish!!!

Q3:The bonnet open or close which do you think is more than likely to have the better result??? Bare in mind that when on the move the airflow around your engine is greater than when sat on a dyno!!! Thus keeping the temp under bonnet cooler.

To me i do give credit as your car seems to be healthy but despite what you have put up figures wise there will always be debatable as i myself have made good figures with a aem v2 before!!!

Its my view that the honda airbox is designed to drown the intake sound ive taken my airbox apart and most can tell its too restictive so much loops and turns!! I believe most of the cone kits will give power over standard for eg: The pipercross thread a while back ppl disputed the claims even with dyno evidence!!!

In hot wether they do suffer in my view but on the move its a different matter!!!

Also why is it that the oem air box modded wood be better plastic retains heat the engine bay will be hot so the filter inside a box thats about 4mm thick wont exactly be cool infact!!! I'm sure if ppl put a temp probe with in the air box and after 1hr30 check it again it Would be clompletey different!!!!

I suppose it's if you're really fussy with these kind of things, I had my AEM v2 on for two years, I wouldn't notice the power difference, it was just for the noise, as my Spoon N1 was too loud. So open cones do have there uses albeit for chavs [smilie=karls_thumb.gif]

Do me a favour mate I'm not a chav and purely want noise it's each to there own for each person purpose

One thing I have looked at with having the K&N is a cold air feed direct the cone for the AEM and K&N variations to get constant cold air flow when driving.

Take a look at my thread topic here

In my own opinion all this intake talk is really only of any point if you are actually going to go far with mods on your car like Kpro/k100 and manifolds etc. I really can't see much point in sticking a £350 intake on a standard CTR is it really going to make that much of difference for you??

With the cones against other intakes I really can't see how people notice a couple BHP difference.
