As those of you who've been on track with me will know, my track prep is removing my work boots and folders from the car. However, I've been gotten by a serious bug after the weekend and finally will get round to prepping my own little track toy to save the Megane and my wallet from a caning.

I've settled on a 106 GTi; very light at circa 950kg and 120bhp as standard. Plus, a lot of them already have manifolds, straight through exhausts and filters thus saving me some money.

The plan is to look for a mechanically sound, if not cosmetically mint example. These can be had for as little as £600.

I will then begin stripping the interior, which'll hopefully be the leather one so I can flog it to a spotty yoof and make back some more money. Although they're pretty basic interiorwise anyway, I'll be hoping to save 70 - 100kg just by getting rid of the bits I don't need. This'll be everything; seats, door cards, carpet, roof lining, speakers, stereo, heater matrix (maybe), glovebox and eventually electric window motors (lexan FTW  ).

So, once all that's out I can source some decent seats and harnesses plus Momo/Sparco/OMP steering wheel and it's good to go in the mean time.

Other mods are planned over the course of the year:

- 4-1 manifold if not fitted already
- Decent straight through exhaust
- Decent cold air fed intake
- Adjustable dampers & springs (although it's likely to just be springs initially) + strut braces (although the cage bolts onto the struts anyway)
- Brakes
- Quickshift
- Polybush
- OMP full bolt in cage
- Cams that don't require additional engine management
- Remap and raise rev limit to allow 60mph in second
- Light track wheels and R888's or even slicks if I can source them (need to find out if I need to baffle the sump)
- Lexan windows

With all that done I'm hoping for circa 870kg with 150bhp so, 172bhp/tonne.

I know it's not a NSX track build but I'm seriously excited and spent most the weekend trawling classifieds and tuner sites. It's like being 17 again but actually being able to afford all the best mods. Everything's so cheap in comparision to CTR & Meg bits!

If anyone can think of anything else worth doing I've missed please let me know.

So, watch this space for the purchase!
:salute

Seems to be the way, im helping my friend K20 his Mk1 Golf, engine does look epic in the bay.

Good handling motors these GTi's, most people ITB them for track use, good old 170+bhp at the fly = good fun!

That'd cost twice as much as the car! Would be awesome though.

ITB's are about £1,500 - £2,000 fitted. This is a CHEAP track toy!

I'd just go for the simple bolt-ons, strip as much as you can from it, some suspension, brakes and slicks. :salut:

You'll soon figure out what else it needs once you get it out on the black stuff.

Forgot to list 'brakes' above.

It's a wish list at the minute but I'm like a kid in a sweet shop. :P Bit worried if I take too much out it'll float off.

A mate at work has a 106 rallye track car and it is rapid round corners, just lacks a bit on the straights.

Sounds like a good project you have there.

Plans sound excellent mate, for brakes 306 gti6 fronts are a very good upgrade with decent pads and disks it would be very cheap and do the job top notch. Can lift the conversion for 60-100 and if you wanted better pads and disks on top. Good luck

That's taken care of...just bought some new trainers, all I need is an angle grinder for the floor pan.

This is my only concern as I said to Andy at the weekend. It can be made quicker though and it's not all about straight line speed if you can carry more through the corners.

A lot of owners are doing these conversions. Or 206 GTi brakes.

Whats the rough budget for the car and all the bits done & ready to go?
Thanks buddy.

I reckon I could get it done including car for £2,000 excluding consumables. Just doing the spreadsheet now.
