As said before the CTR has a zero towing limit, it says it in the manual and to me that would be enough to not do it.

Even if you managed to windle the warrenty while you have a tow bar on what happens when your flying down motorway and it gives way, causes a pile up and maybe kills someone .... I doubt "the dealer said it would be ok" would stand up in court. Is your warrenty more important than your safety? :-S

You have asked the opinions of dealers only ... Who are there to sell the car ... On commission ... I can't say I'd trust anything they say, can't say they would care once they have the cash.

Not been an arse pal but you've asked everyones opinion and are still contemplating doing it.

This thread stinks of fail, but for complete clarity this is a quote from page 413 of my MY09 CTR manual. The book is writen for Type-R and Type-S models.

On Type-R model
Your vehicle is not designed to tow a trailer.

This is paragraph two if the first column of the above page, right above the big warning box.
This is all the information you need to make an informed choice not to tow anything.

I said that I may contemplate a Type S Diesel if the Type R cannot have a TowBar .... and he said (today) that a TowBar can DEFINATELY be fitted to a Type S - it states on his computer that 3 Doors can be fitted with them as long as they do not have a BodyKit.

Seriously, as an Engineer I think the reason is simply the lack of Torque? - I cannot, for the life of me, think what else it may be? The suspension can cope with sensible noseweights (about 50kg) - I mean you can carry that weight in the boot easily. So, as they laughingly told me, "The suspension will not collapse" ....

I'm prepared to give up if it is shown from all quarters that a TowBar cannot be fitted, but - with all due respect, if Honda Main Dealers are saying I can fit one then I owe it to myself to explore the possibility.

I really do appreciate your input and you are probably totally correct .... but, who knows, things may have changed for the 2010 car?

who exactly are you trying to convince? yourself or everyone else?


"Honda main dealers" know what they need to know to sell a car. phone Honda UK if you want to be definatly sure.


personally speaking i dont think it has anything to do with lack of torks, and i believe it is suspension related. but this is getting incredibly tedious now, buy the car and fit a tow bar. go against what Honda deemed necessary to put in the manual.

"You owe it to yourself to explore the possibility" - Are you for real!! Why bother exploring the possibility as you already know the answer, just fit one & be done. You'll be ok because the Honda salesman said it would be fine........ :thumbup:

Just been to another Honda Dealership.

They have a Mugen in the showroom too.

I asked about a TowBar - he looked at his computer and said, "There is a TowBar available, it says that it cannot be fitted to a Civic with a bodykit"

He followed by saying, "Of course the Mugen has a BodyKit, I suspect that they don't want to damage/change the rear skirt - I will talk to the workshop tomorrow and get back to you. They may not want to cut the rear skirt as if they make a mess or crack it the customer may not buy"

I said that if it just a skirt cutting issue I will come down and cut it for myself, to risk to them, then. He thought I was joking - but I'm deadly serious!

So, I guess the suspension doesn't collapse at all ...... I just looked like a right idiot saying that I 'heard' it would!

Either way, he will talk to the Technicians tomorrow and get back to me - fingers crossed!!

Great sales tactic, make the customer feel like a total retard . Then call over other people to point and laugh.

Send a PM to a guy called Mugen Power (I think, evo can correct me if wrong) he will end this debacle.

Look. Its simple. Weight across the boot is spread across and area, whereas a tow bar focuses that weight and therefore pressure into a single point of contact (think what high heals would do to your head if your wife stood on you and then compare to her wearing trainers).

The facts are in black and white and set out before you, so BELIEVE them. You cannot fit a tow bar to the Type R and by the looks of it they have also extended the warning to the Type S.

1 Honda main dealer is saying you can fit it, but I'll tell you now, you WILL kiss your warranty goodbye. Simple as that.
So with all due respect, just believe what is being said here. On the whole and collectively we know more than most of the dealers.
