Well easy to fix for the cost of tube of heat sink compound mate  Have done mine and a few others before and it takes about an hour and half and most of that time is spent waiting for things to cool down :salut:

Blame the EU for banning leaded solder, btw lead-free solder is 3 times the price.
It's more to do with thermal stress and eventually a crack spreads across the solder joint causing the chip to use more power until it overheats.
This is also the main cause of the 360's problems but the ATI chip in that blows when it overheats and needs replaced but just reflowing the solder usually fixes the PS3

seems pretty easy enough
I think I'm going follow the 'gilksy' videos when mine dies again, I've done the little hair dryer trick for now and 3 or 4 days later it's still working, but when it goes again I've got nothing to lose so out comes the insides!

Re the heat gun.... Faz do you have one of those fancy heatguns in the gilksy videos, where you can adjust the temp perfectly to what you want? Mines slightly more rudimentary than that  will a run of the mill heat gun get too hot??

My top of the range all singing all dancing heat gun* has two highly adjustable settings.... "Hot" and "F**king Hot" :-D
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... EATGUN.htm

I used the "Hot" setting the first time I reflowed my ps3 and it didn't last very long before the YLOD appeared again. The second time round I used the "Hot" setting for a while then thought it would be rude not to try out the "F**king Hot" setting  My PS3 is still going strong (am tempting fate here) after way over 30 days worth of gameplay on this 2nd fix :-D That must be more than enough for any non OCD gamer :-D

*ie the one that I found in the cupboard when my ps3 broke

My PS3 is unbreakable. Had it since about a week after release and it is on every day. At the moment it's on for hours as we use the Play Tv and i haven't had a single problem with it. Its Awesome.
