Hi Matty,

Yeah they are different beasts, that's for sure......used to have an R33 VSPEC before I bought the R34, that's what got me hooked !! :)

A lot of people don't like the R33's so you can generally get a good one for not much money relative to it's R34 brothers.......... I loved my R33 and would definately have another if money was no object. I think R34 is better all rounder and R33 more comfy for long GT type cross country running.

Looked at a R33 GTR, i could afford one, are they really that fast? What are they like reliability wise? and running costs?

Definitely buy one standard and not modified and if you take your time you might even get an unofficial UK model that Middlehurst Nissan imported.
Over the short term mine hasn't had any failures, but it's still an expensive beast to run. £70 of V-Power will last 200 miles if you're taking it easy. The consumables like discs are not cheap at all, nor are tires. Servicing is reasonable in comparison to the CTR.
Insurance will be at least double the CTR. Mine is £870 and my CTR was £350. They're old so take someone who knows their sh-t as you don't want a bad one as it'll cost you a bomb. Tax is cheaper than the CTR due to it being graded on engine size and not CO2, so £190 for a year.

The R32, 3 and 4 all share the same RB26DETT engine.
The breathing mods that get put on CTR's would give triple or more gains if done to a GTR. Mine completely standard is 280bhp, but is now sat at 380bhp@hubs which is around 450bhp@fly with exhaust, induction, cams, ecu and boost controller. +170bhp for about 3-4K is pretty good :-D

that would cost me over 300 quid a month, just to get to work and back!

that's nearly 3 times what the civic costs!

Mart,

I'm with you on the parts thing....... I remember when I bought my Civic and went out and got the same Tein suspension and it was nearly 40% cheaper, brakes were 50% cheaper etc etc. I suppose it's just a numbers game relative to the cost put into developing these things and generally I think the quality is higher for some parts also as being a heavier car things like brakes take a bit more of a pounding !

One thing I noticed though is that mine used to eat fuel also after simple modifications, but mine now makes around 650HP and yet usually the worst I'd get would be 200 miles ish. Maybe 195 - 205, but if I was doing a reasonable run each day I get more like 250 miles and on a long trip maybe a little more. With a replacement ECU (I have HKS FCON Pro but any reasonable ECU should do) but more importantly a good tune (lean cruise mixtures are the key) you'll make your money back fairly quickly on the fuel you'd save ! Go an see Abbey Motorsport if you're close to them........... Tell Mark I sent you.....he'll look after you :)

I dont even think mine'd manage 200 miles on £70 worth of v-power.........

....it already costs me £40 to drive 100 miles at 65mph :bigcry:

bring on the hks fcon re-map

yeh £70 is pretty much a full tank, i think my average mpg is about 15 :???:

Hopefully when mine os mapped properly i'll be able to claw back some mpg, plus get some more torque available lower down the rev range.

Seeing as you've got similar power to me when do you reach peak power and torque?

Ah if you're worried about that grab a diesel Lupo

If £40 = 33 litres worth of petrol (assumption of £1.18 per litre of VMax?!) that that is 7.5 gallons, which by my figures equates to 13.3 MPG. I salute you for such figures :salut:

Funnily enough I have already, it's where I got my tune done and my brakes too :-D
Was nearly a 300 mile round trip though.
Gota love the Micra you get if your car is in for over a day complete with GTR numberplate
Infact despite it looking horrendous it's not a bad car for a commuter.

About the fuel, I could get more quite easily, but then where would the fun in that be?

canman wrote:That is a good question....... I'll have to look at the dyno sheet when I can dig it out for you.

I think just from the seat of the pants dyno, I'd say around 5500-6000 rpm torque and 7000 - 7500 rpm HP.
My peak power is 8000rpm and my peak torque is 7000rpm :???:
