That sounds very likely, happens to all of us mate.

Ed, I often crunch by accident in my wifes corsa, the box is crap (well 2nd sticks really bad) in that, but it is my fault even in that, its being too soft or not concentrating enough.

Saying all that I find the gear position in the FN2 is slightly further away than my previous car and sits somewhere between the ep3 and most other cars.

My shortish arms and lack of reach to the box doesnt help either, maybe if it was a tad closer to me rather than feel like it im having to slightly reach for it it would help. Not that im stretching but its not an ideal position I find.

I also find that with the clutch, depending on how i'm sitting and reach to the pedals, it's quite often a combination of poor seating position often on the stretch a little if you know what I mean, as I said previous, its not a stretch as such. All these factors add to poor changes and clutch action.

Just got my call back from Honda Technical, so I am pleased that they followed up on my call to them yesterday.

I was advised that the gearbox issue is under investigation, but there is still no resolution.

They have had a handful of owners raise the issue with them, but judging by the comments on this forum there are quite a number of us affected.

I would recommend that owners should raise the issue with their dealer, such that it can be logged with Honda Technical. That will ensure some focus is kept on the problem.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to wait to see how the 3rd gear change feels at high revs. Plan to work up to 8000rpm gradually over the next few hundred miles...

Yep, definately a 'two notch' feel, as opposed to the other gears. Having said that, I haven't crunched 'em yet, just been aware of the difference in feel and acted accordingly. Sorry, but if it takes a split second more to ensure the gear has been properly selected then surely it's worth making sure it's in if that's how it works?

I can feel its different, but I hold it in place so have never had a problem with it.

I've only had it actually jump out 3rd twice since having the car.

But I sometimes feel the 2 notches when putting it in 3rd.

I'll mention it to my dealer, I doubt they will do anything but hopefully they can pass the details on to Honda UK so they pull their finger out and find a fix.

Watch the revs when you guys miss 3rd - we had to put our demonstrator on the HDS and it told us someone had hit just over 9k after missing third on a test drive!

Not quite the 13k that an EP3 customer hit though!

Does the car record how we thrash them or is it just something the demo car has?

I decided to give mine a good seeing to yesterday and REALLY warmed her up if u know what I mean

after a good lot of VTECing the gear box felt VERY smooth and third was just like the rest of the gears.....no second notch feel or anything

today now it's cooled off its back to its old tricks again

yes i have found that, the box seems smooth when your ragging it however when driving locally (slowly) then the 3rd gear is difficult

I've also got the '3rd gear issue'. In the past week I've crunched 3 times in 3rd. Each time this has been when first starting the car up and driving with low revs.

When warm the feel in 3rd is inconsistent. Sometimes notchy, other times perfect. I thought it was just me being half asleep when setting off in a morning, but looks like there's more to it after reading this thread!

Yes it does.

The gearbox in the FN2 is an evolution unit of the one used in the EP3. The difference on the FN2 is that it has carbonising to aid high speed shifting on 4th, 5th and 6th.

3rd on mine seems to be getting better as the miles build (although it has never been really bad). Still have the two stage feel every now and again but very rarely. It has never jumped out of gear.

In fact... thinking about it... I've never had ANY car jump out of gear !

its dooing my head in now as i keep crunching 3rd!

I don't think it jumps out of gear, the problem is that people are hitting the 1st notch thinking its in when it isn't.

If you don't hit the second notch it will jump back to neutral when you lift the clutch

yer glen ur spot on as far as my problems are and im sure its the same for the rest, but it shouldnt have 2 notche's it should slide into 3rd with ease!

and its bugging me!

my dealer said there is no fix, but if they dont sort something soon im going push it as for the cost of the car it should not do this.

rarh!
