Burning Rubber!

Completed firdst full journey outside of town on the new feds.

Initial impressions:

- much quieter than pots for cruising - a major bonus.
- loads more grip in the wet
- also more grip in the dry for quick pull aways (no more of that juddering that you mentioned!)
- marginally more sluggish/heavy on turn in. I think this is probably because the side walls aren't quite as stiff as the old potenzas. It could also be cos I have them slightly less inflated (34 psi compared to 36 on old pots). Not a major concern and more than made up for by the bonuses above
- most importantly they're a bloody bargain!

Great review, just what we were looking for.

Sounds like they are exactly as good as Federal have been shouting about.

Sold! I'm getting Federal SS595's next.

I'm going to get them too!!

Is 34-36psi not a tad high?? That said I've heard that running 34/32 instead of 32/30 makes the car handle better.

Evostu wrote:You can pick these tyres up in 215/40/17 from http://www.topgear.co.uk for around 55 quid a corner.

If they are good as they say then they are a bargain.

Hope this helps?

Fantastic thread matey, as ever!

Curious though, why go for 215's? Standards are 205's? Also will having 40's over standard 45's be any different?

215/40/17's are the closest rolling radius to the stock Potenzas.

Lots of people who have the Toyo's are forced to use the 215/40's as it's only size that Toyo do which is close to the CTR stock size.

We have since found out though that Federal SS595's are now available in 205/45/17 but are rated V instead of W. But to be honest this should make jack all difference as I ain't going to be going over 149mph.

Having the wider tyre is apparently great for grip but you do tend to lose some feeling in the steering.

Cheers mate, I see now.

Just curious about innacurate speedo readings/gearing etc.

V rated should be ok, but Imay go on the occasional airfield... Will buy some track wheels I think!

Now to try and find some....

If you want the Feds then goto http://www.topgear.co.uk as they are an official stockist.

The 215/40's make speedo slightly out but nothing serious. 70mph is actually 68mph.

Or you can just drive over to Burnley and get them fitted there and not pay the delivery.

Just ordered some feds 205/45/17 at £128 fitted for a pair, getting them fitted on 31st of this month. The guy at the Topgear St Albans store said that he doesn't recommend them though as they are a budget tyre, and would recommend the Bridgestones. So i'm getting these on your reviews so hopefully they will be as good as people have said.
Will let you know what i think in a couple of weeks.

I'll say one thing. The Toyo is classed as a budget tyre and that has some glowing reviews.

The Bridgestones are nearly double the price and not much cop in the wet.

A user on here already has a set of Fed SS595's and they reckon that the grip is miles better.

The tyre technology that Federal use is actually from Bridgestone & Dunlop.

Let us know how you get.
