How did you manage to decipher such a mish mash of words and work that one out?

What's the difference between real time and render then? And why does it make a difference?
With rendered, they make a promotional video to market a game. Think cut-scene. It's not what you should actually expect a game to look like.

With a game, you have a 3D environment and with some of the elements in that environment in motion. For each frame, the GPU has to calculate how the world should look from the camera's perspective, so it has to calculate where the rays of light from light sources will go, what surfaces those light rays hit, how that surface is coloured, textured, shaped and what reflectance it has and then work out what's going to happen to each and every one of those light rays and how they will then reflect and perhaps hit other surfaces in the environment and change before eventually heading back to the camera viewpoint.

The number of calculations that need to be performed is huge, for each and every frame. The more time you can devote to processing each frame, the better it will look. With rendering, it's like making a cartoon or stop-animation (wallace & gromit). You chuck a vast amount of very powerful GPU processing time at rendering each frame till it looks amazing, then you save the image of that finished frame. String all the single finished frames together and show them like a movie and you have something that looks amazing and many times better than any GPU could manage. You might have thrown many minutes of rendering time at each frame.

While actually playing a game, a GPU has to render each frame in real time. So a youtube video that shows realtime performance is much closer to showing you what you might actually get with really high-end hardware.

for online?

I'd actually probaly vouch for a paid service, that way may be better quality

Besides the fact that Xbox gets slated somewhat because they charge 50 pence a week or whatever it is is quite pathetic

Either that or a more focused approach to the Sony market place / App Store.

It's the way everything is going. All their competitors have similar structure.

Money doesn't always mean better quality. Steam is free, and is better than both PSN and XBL. I think the difference is, Valve obviously use part of their cut of game sales to provide a stable online system. MS just rape the sh-t out of every one of their consumers and if Sony can get in on the act, they will too.

Wouldn't say steam was better, never had any real issues with any platform.

There not all equal though are they, social aspects aside, one has to be better than the other, statistically. In my experience of them all, PSN frequently suffers with online issues, XBL costs £5 a month with no serious issues, but is generally pretty expensive with misleading prices and Steam is free, has no serious issues, uses local currency and has regular good sale events. Pretty clear to me which I think is best, and just so happens to be the most used.

I'm interested to see how Sony will fare if they get the PS4 to market before M$ get the Ecks Bawks to market.

It's possible that Sony will dominate this generation if they do. The Wii U has had very underwhelming sales figures compared to the Wii, and Nintendo don't really seem to know what to do. Their reliance on old IP (Mario and Zelda) can only take them so far and thus far many developers don't seem all that interested in the platform.

Plenty believe that the Xbox only did as well as it did because it got to market before the Playstation 3 did, with a lower starting price. However, the PS3's success can also be attributed to the Bluray drive. Since both the Infinity and the PS4 seem to have built in bluray drives, we will have to see!

Should be an interesting format war this generation.

Sony need this to be a success as the company is struggling. The trouble is Microsoft have the better online infrastructure and if Sony can't match it, then that will make or break the PS4.

A few months between the rivals launching means nothing because the hardcore fans will own both anyway.
