Thanks to Ben and Neil at tdi north today, we had a bit of an experient using my ep3 and came up with some interesting conclusions
My car has a trust cat back and nothing else, no header or manifold or kpro/k100
all runs were conducted with the bonnet shut
We had two runs using a modified oem airbox and oem air filter
Run 1. 216bhp at around 6800rpm
Run 2. 217bhp at around 6900rpm
The next two runs were using a three month old typhoon kit which had covered around 1500 miles tops
Run 1. 215bhp at around 7500rpm
Run 2. 212bhp at around 7900rpm
So you can see definitively with the cone filter, the car is losing chunks of power. I think if we'd done more runs with the cone the figures would have steadily worsened.
Ben couldn't email me the graphs because he had no memory stick but he's sending them to me tomorrow so I will post them up.
I have argued for the k+n in the past so it's been a placebo effect kicking in because of the noise levels and the feeling of a much more aggressive crossover. The aggressive crossover is in effect because the car was running poorly low down which accentuates the 'on cam' feel of the car
I still love the k+n for the sound track but guess what, the oem box is back on and k+n is shortly going up for sale. Like I said, can't be beaten for sound but if your chasing figures then it's no good
