Is it normal for the mpg indicator bar to wildly fluctuate all over the place? It doesnt seem very accurate at all on mine.

The overall average mpg seems ok but the current mpg indicator jumps about too much.

The car seems to drive ok otherwise.

When you accelerate it will go low. When you lift off it will go high...

it never will be constant, its taking your mpg all the time, working it out every sec or what ever, its not going to say i'll take it every 30secs then avg out for you becuase i don't want to jump about the place.

Maybe just being a bit paranoid but when it shows 20 mpg when im only part accelerating and then 100 mpg when im coasting it just seemed a bit excessively varied thats all.

My brothers VW Golf has a mpg calculator. When he speeds up it goes from 45mpg to 20mpg! It just means that what ever speed you do, that is the mpg you are doing at the time. I find it totally pointless to be quite honest. These digital gizmo stuff will never give you an acurate reading just an avarage reading.

Just seem that mine drops quite low when im not even even driving it that fast.

using 50% throttle giving 20 mpg seemed a bit crazy and then it would shoot upto 100 mpg the next second when coasting.

Maybe the MAF sensor could need a clean or is slightly faulty. Might try and reset ECU to see what happens.

perfectly normal, it tells you exact to the second how you are driving, if your are coasting you will get 100mpg and over, slight touch of the peddle will use more fuel, also its different if you are going up or down a hill. its to the second information perfectly normal

"As far s i know it takes time for the system to update to take into account braking accelerating idling etc. The one i use is the overall reading... the other one would drive you nuts unless you were using on long motorway stretches"

and

"If you jump up and down on the throttle you can pretend its a graphic equaliser
Upsets the passengers though."

All cars will do this.
Any slight acceleration will drop your current fuel economy dramatically, The only way this wont happen is if you feather the throttle very very lightly but your fuel economy will still go down.
When you coast in gear ie foot off the throttle the engine will use 0 fuel, if you take the car out of gear and coast with the engine on tick over, you will use some fuel. All combustion engines work like this.

It's giving you the exact conditions the engine is under for the last second or so of driving, if you floor it the car will drop down probably below 20 mpg and when you are coasting the engine is idle so it's not using hardly any fuel and you are still moving so in effect smalll amount of fuel for a large distance covered = 0ver 100 mpg. Simples.

It's effectively the same thing as the Eco read out that other civics have, you know the green light red light to show how efficiently you are driving.
