I'm not disputing what has been said here, but this is interesting:-

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/SALES/1564758.htm

You will note that the seller states, "The car also has on it a limited edition towbar for the type r, located from Belgium as it is rare, worth £500 inc fitting from honda"

Not saying that the seller has got it right - just it puts an interesting slant on things?

It's not an interesting slant on things, it just means that some clown decided to fit a towbar.

Lots of car dealers don't know about the cars they are selling - we bought a car last week and the dealer knew less about the car than we did.

Local dealers will know local fitters for towbars etc and just ask them to get one fitted. The towbar fitter isn't really going to say no unless they are very very honest and know whether the car in question can be fitted with a towbar.

Lots of fitters will fit what you ask them to without doing any research on things - if they have a bar that fits, they will fit it as long as they get paid to do so.

The car, as said many times already, IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TOWING ANYTHING. That doesn't mean you won't find one with a towbar that has been fitted, even by a dealer/sub contractor.

As EvoStu said - this WILL void the warranty, and should anything happen you will have to fight the local dealer who got it fitted for you for any kind of refund etc. Honda will merrily tell you that it's not their problem, which clearly it isn't, as they specify in the manual that the car ISN'T SUITABLE FOR TOWING.

When I got my EP3, the dealer fitted the wheels on the wrong way so that the directional tread was facing backwards. I took it back to them and told them and they tried to tell me it wouldn't matter - not a problem etc. Just shows how much some dealers know.

Who fitted your towbar?

I guess 'out of warranty' you can do what you like, and if it's just a light item you are towing it should be fine .... of course, to attempt to pull something a little heavy would be madness. The nose weight would be the same, just the total weight wouldn't be pulled by 142 lbs/ft of torque.

He's lying to you.

Pete leave the idea alone. If your going to tow use another vehicle.

Well, I did take a caravan to JAE, with my civic, it just wasn't towing it - anyway i'm sure Honda have their reasons not to homologate it for towing, I doubt its to do with torque though, probably a combination of things. My Mondeo has a 3.0 V6 with plenty of torque and thats not allowed to tow either yet if you have any other Mondeo in the range they are - go figure.

Can't really see any physical or technical reason why a CTR couldnt tow a trailor or a jet ski, one with a caravan on would be quite a ridiculous spectacle though.

Just been to another Honda Dealership.

They have a Mugen in the showroom too.

I asked about a TowBar - he looked at his computer and said, "There is a TowBar available, it says that it cannot be fitted to a Civic with a bodykit"

He followed by saying, "Of course the Mugen has a BodyKit, I suspect that they don't want to damage/change the rear skirt - I will talk to the workshop tomorrow and get back to you. They may not want to cut the rear skirt as if they make a mess or crack it the customer may not buy"

I said that if it just a skirt cutting issue I will come down and cut it for myself, to risk to them, then. He thought I was joking - but I'm deadly serious!

I did ask whether the suspension would collapse if it was used for towing - he didn't stop laughing for 15 minutes, honestly - I felt really stupid :???: He called his manager over, he called the other salesmen over and told them, they all fell about laughing!

So, I guess the suspension doesn't collapse at all ...... I just looked like a right idiot saying that I 'heard' it would!

Either way, he will talk to the Technicians tomorrow and get back to me - fingers crossed!! :-D

That sounded like it happened.

Great sales tactic, make the customer feel like a total retard . Then call over other people to point and laugh.

Send a PM to a guy called Mugen Power (I think, evo can correct me if wrong) he will end this debacle.
