Right, thought this could be quite useful, as i know a few others are in this situation.

I want to go on the tour, however id much prefer to have a passenger or a co-pilot (as long as their insured) for some shared drving.

Looking to be a passenger:
I did all the driving on this years tour (2500ish miles) & also a ring trip in 2005, and never felt too tired to drive (or the need to stop when others didn't).

If i don't manage to find a suitable passenger, then i'd be quite happy to drive on my own (there's always the walkie-talkies id people are feeling lonely).

Driving & single accomodation would get on my bank managers nerves....
therefore 1 possible solution might be -

drive on your own
single drivers share room(s) - as in more than just 2 in a room

Move the beds out of the way, and everyone brings their own bed & sleeping bag (be a bit like camping but leave the tent at home).

that way you can allocate more money on the priorities (such as fuel & food)

just a thought

Fully agree with mosta,

Im hoping to do the tour next year and would prefer to drive on my own,

It would be handy if the guys driving on their own could share accomodation, that would at least bring the costs down a bit.

For some reason I can never boot it with a passenger in the car,
Something Im just not comfortable doing with someone else in the car.

how many guys are thinking of going solo ?

See i definately wouldn't mind going solo, got enough music to keep me compnay.

However, im only a student, so the cost of going alone would prob kill me. But if sharing accomodation is the way to go then count me in.

me with a good idea??? - well thats something that doesn't happen everyday!

was just thinking that most people would like to drive the route/ring, although if you're pax, then you're bound to miss part of the route that you want to do out. As this is essentially a driving holiday, then the priority should be on driving - so spend your cash there, and cut corners on the other bits - i.e. accomodation.

although i did all the driving last time, i did have a passenger (won't let anyone else drive MY car unless its for a matter thats more important than life & death!). Jason was V useful for:

1) Company for the 8+ hours in the car every day
2) halving the fuel bill
3) As a sounding board when we lost everyone at the start of route napoleon & didn't know which way to go. I suggested 1 way, he suggested another, and we got back on track (he was right / i was wrong)
4) looking after (using) the walkie-talkie
5) having a week-long photo competition (that we both did poorly at)

Although it does prohibit you singing along in the car, and you are a bit more refined when there's a passenger in the car (although in my case, thats probably not a bad thing)

Can we find out if it is possible for a couple of guys to share a room ?

Those that are driving solo could all share a room or two to keep the costs down ?

What do u think ?

That will be fine, we have managed to arrange that on the last couple of tours for other people. Just make sure you book twin beds and not a double  well unless you're into manlove

Bear in mind it will still be expensive though, as you will be paying for all your fuel, tolls and ferry/tunnel with no-one to split the costs with. You should budget around £800-1000 for the week all in, if you do it this way.

Hi,

I didn't sign up for HET because I thought I'd have to pay for a single room and costs would get out of hand. Now you've posted Lynda and have got me thinking ... oh oh dangerous! :D

I'm going to send Dave a PM to get some info sent to me and I'll make up my mind sharpish.

Don't be put off if your cant find a passenger. I did the First Euro-Tour alone and it didn't put me off. Think of as this, the car is alot lighter with no passenger and their luggage, so your fuel bill will be reduced and your car will be quicker

Also, I drove the entire route of the second HET and didn't ever feel too tired to continue. I was usually one of the last ones to go to bed too! Driving at warp factor along the Swiss Mountain sides will keep you awake for sure! The long haul back along the Toll Motorway got a bit tedious, but that was livened up a bit when myself, Mossy and Paul avoided a Police chase

:rambo: [smilie=spank.gif] Forgot all about that - don't think it got a mention in the epic Eurotour Diary. Note, if anyone wants to know more about the background of the trip, I wrote a diary last year (70+ pages IIRC) that gives a detailed account of what we got up to last year - should be on here somewhere if you search for it
