HONDA CIVIC MAKES CLEAN SWEEP OF WTCC RACE IN SLOVAKIA

Having set more pole positions than any other driver since the present format of the World Touring Car Championship was introduced in 2005, Gabriele Tarquini converted his 17th pole position into a convincing victory in the feature race of the World Touring Car Championship event in Slovakia. The victory was even sweeter for the Castrol Honda team with Tiago Monteiro bringing the second Civic home in second place. To cap a stunning result in only the third event for the Honda Civic WTCC cars the Zengo Motorsport entered Civic took third place driven by Hungarian star, Norbert Michelisz. Tarquini set fastest lap time in the race.

The first full WTCC Honda podium in 2013

As the pace car pulled off from leading the field round for the rolling start and the red lights went out, the three Honda Civics took up a commanding lead which they maintained throughout the 10 laps of Race 1. Whilst Tarquini moved clear of his two Civic partners, Tiago Monteiro and Michelisz worked hard to keep ahead of former champion, Yvan Muller. Gabriele's advantage at the flag was just 1.2 seconds from Tiago with Norbert right on his tail.

"I was comfortable from the start," said the experienced Italian as tears of emotion flowed from even some of the mature members of the team. "I was able to be smooth and keep the pace high so I moved ahead a little bit whilst the other two had competition behind and had to watch their mirrors. I wanted to be the winner of the first race for the new Honda Civic, it was really important to me after the testing and work we have done during the winter to make the car ready. We still have a lot to learn and to explore the full potential but every time we run we have improvements. We want to be the most competitive car on the track."

Monteiro's result was superb in many ways. Following his accident in Marrakesh, a brand new Civic had to be readied for Slovakia with very little testing time available. "It ran perfectly right from the start and we improved it in the sessions. My front row grid position was my thank you to the JAS Team and Honda for making the car ready. I tried to keep with Gabriele in race 1 but my tyres were working too hard towards the end, but Norbert and I were close and very pleased with the result," said Tiago.

Strong performance of Tiago Monteiro in the first race

For Michelisz, third overall on the podium was a great publicity boost for his home event in just one week's time at the Hungaroring. "For me I think the season has now started and to be alongside Gabriele and Tiago on the Honda podium is fantastic."

Daisuke Horiuchi, Large Project Leader for WTCC development from Honda R & D in Japan is confident that the cars are improving all the time. "We make small steps to improve in every area each time we run and this is a great result and a step towards more results. To see the Michelisz team also run our Civic so well as part of the Honda Racing family is very encouraging."

Race 2 in the WTCC event format sees the top 10 in qualifying start in reverse grid order so the two Castrol Honda cars were placed on row 5, right in the middle of the 23 car grid. Gabriele and Tiago made great starts with the Portuguese diving through the pack into 4th place in the early corners with Tarquini 6th. On the second lap Monteiro was pushed wide by another competitor but recovered brilliantly in 7th whilst Tarquini moved ahead to fifth. By lap 5 Tarquini was in 4th place and Monteiro recovering to 5th. On lap 7 Tarquini took advantage of a mistake by the leaders and grabbed 3rd place for another podium finish making this a great day for the Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team.

Team Principal Alessandro Mariani was delighted with the results. "There has been a great job done by my team, but we must remember it is a long season and there are many races yet to run but we are working all the time to be strong on every type of circuit. Next week we are in Hungary and I think the Honda will be good there so we must try for more results."
