Finally managed to get some time to write up a short race report for the opening round of the 2013 TEGIWA Civic Cup. For 2013 we are the 'title sponsors' of the series and company owner Luke is competing in his Civic EP3. The 'field' is mainly EK Civics with a few EG's in the mix. The EG and EK's run with around 185bhp/ton - basically fully stripped, caged, and a B16A2 with bolt on breathing mods Lukes car again is only 185bhp/ton as he runs 100kg of ballast but has 245bhp courtesy of TDI North. The series had been restricted to just EG's and EK's but for 2013 onwards all Civics are allowed - word on the street is an EF will soon be on the grid too!

The first round was Cadwell Park on 1st April. It was a bitterly cold day with a light dusting of snow early in the morning. It was Luke's first competitive race... in a car, (He used to race an F1 Hovercraft) so he sported the obligatory novice badge. I know full well he was nervous as you quite rightly would be. The civic cup lot don't hold back - rubbings racing!

Driver: Luke Sedzikowski
Occupation: Owner of TEGIWA

Qualifying
Luke got was out early and the car seemed to be going ok and he managed to put in some mid field times and qualified in eighth, but his qualifying was cut short (just 4 laps) because the brakes started to stick on. In testing (3 weeks prior) the car had suffered with the brakes sticking on - some of you on Facebook may recall us asking for a brake pipe on there, we thought the problem was fixed as the rest of testing that day went smoothly. After qualifying the Civic Cup race engineer suggested and made a few changes and it was fingers crossed for the first race. The top speed was 108.5mph in qualifying and was Luke, it shows that on a different track with longer straights the EP3 is quick!

Race 1
Luke got an average start, and into the first couple of corners he hadn't made or lost any places, however, as soon as the straights came it was obvious something wasn't right. He was getting easily overtaken and it was clear that the brakes were still playing up. It almost sounded like the car was bogging down and not revving through as it should. To put it into perspective his opening lap was 2.09 (second slowest), and the front runner was 1.52! Second lap 1.53 (again second slowest). Then the third lap the brakes free'd up - it was so noticeable. His lap times fell by between 5 seconds and 7 seconds instantly and he managed to claw a few positions back to finish 7th.

Race 2
It started much the same as Race 1. Luke managed to hold position for the first few corners but the brakes were again stuck on for the first two laps. It seemed they were more stuck on this time though as Luke posted an opening lap of 2.13, a massive 22s slower than front runner Dave Winstanley. Second lap they were still stuck on, with Luke managing a 1.56, 12s slower than the front. Third lap the brakes free'd like clockwork -strange. With no one in sight Luke had an open track and posted some great lap times (3rd fastest), but he lost too much at the start to regain any positions finishing in 12th position.

Luke's problem is being sorted and the car is going to come out better than ever for the next round with a little help from Area Motorsport, but pretty much everything brake related has been changed now. Round 2 is at Croft - Sunday, 12th May and is being televised! TEGIWA on TV y0! Make sure you get to at least one of the rounds over the year. Its really great to watch Civics thrash it out on track.
