My dealer stuck in shell fully synth 10W-40 on my first service. Is it worth bleeding the whole thing dry and sticking in mobil 5w-40? Or shall i just top up with mobil 5w-40?

Ok,

The Shell fully syn is not a synthetic, it is a hydrocracked mineral oil, my suggestion is to top up with something similar, and save the good stuff for the next oil change and start with a clean slate, not point mixing the good stuff with the ok stuff.

Oilman, I know you will know the answer to this cos you are the oilman

My dealers (both at Peterborough & Grantham) both having a good rep around these parts, tell me that 10W40 Shell Helix, a semi synth I think, is the oilf for the life of a CTR. They don't say change to a Full Synth oil at any time and don't recommend it when asked.

I don't doubt you for a minute as it is obvious you know your onions but I am confused as to why they would all say this when others 'in the know' such as yourself say to ditch it for full synth.

What am I missing here and the 64000 dollar question.....would I be better off taking 5 lites of Full Synth to them on my next service and getting that bunged in? If so, what is the daddy of synths (i.e. what would you put in your CTR??)

Thanks for the advice.

Good question,

The japs for some reason only test their engines on semi synthetic, thus when manufactured their minimum requirment is a semi synthetic, but the fact remains a fully or true synthetic is better, remember the garage will also recomend what ever they have signed a deal with, so marketing will play a part.

If it was my car I would be using the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 or the Motul 300V 5w-40 ester/pao synthetics as these really are the daddies.

Oilman.

I know this question has been asked a number times   , but after reading all of your posts/excellent advise - my brian is in overload.

Anyway to keep the question short - for a brand new CTR, which oil would you reccommend to 'top up' with? also which oil should I use, when its first services is due?

Cheers,

To top up with use a 10w-40 semi synthetic, as brand new cars tend to have this in until first service to help running in.

When you have first service you can move to a 5w-40 full synthetic, a top quality one would be the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 or the Motul 300v or 8100 5w-40.

Hope this helps.

The 10w-40 is a semi synthetic, this is fine for your car, however a 5w-40 fully synthetic is a better oil.

Is VALVOLINE (Full synthetic) a good oil??

So basically whatever fully synthetic oil i use it should be 5w-40 or 0-40?

Valvoline is ok depending on which one it is, but the 5w-40 0w-40 grade is what you are looking for, for the type r engine.

GUY,

my car is going in for a service at teh end of the week (only just booked it) and im wanting to put in the best oil that i can. from what i am reading its the Silkolene Pro S 5w30/40 thats the best for the car?

i know thats the correct viscosity but is the Silkolene the best? i have been running my car recently on Mobil 1 for topping it up as i know thats pretty good but i want the best that i can get.

i have called around a few places and i have been told by one of the only suppliers that ihave been able to help at all that Fuchs oils are the same as silkolene but just re-branded for the european market and is used in modern VW engines etc.....

is this right? cos im not sure if i can get hold of the Silkolene but i can get Fuchs titan Super Syn SL5 5w-40.

cheers,

Alex

Alex,

If you want the best then the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 is it.

Fuchs now own Silkolene but the Pro S range is Silkolene only.

The Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 is a good quality pao synthetic, similar in make up to Mobil1. However the Silkolene Pro S range is a pao/ester blend and has the edge.

I stock and supply both of these oils, call me on 01209 215164 on Thursday and I can have it delivered straight to you garage for you on Friday.

Cheers

Guy,

got the oil ok on friday, it arrived at about 10.45 so the car was ready for lunch time 8)

the car feels loads better since the 37.5k service, kind of smoother and the engine feels looser again and im getting a nicer exhaust note from teh fujitsubo and decat 8)

dont know if its the oil or the service in general although it looks like the oil is the main thing thats done along with the break fluid.

anyway, thanks again

Guy, I just got a new CTR and my dealer tells me that it currently has Mobil1 semi synth in it. Which grade should I use to top it up with 5w30 or 0w40? Also where can I get this? Halfrauds don't sell it.

Thanks
Agg
