While the machine will perform beyond a console at that budget it'll quickly tail off and go out of date long before a new generation is even announced

Well I wouldn't build that as it won't work
That mobo doesn't support a 5th gen Haswell CPU.
Z97 100% works, and Z87 will as long as the manufacturer has updated the firmware, but there's no guarantee. Z77 however is for Sandbridge and Ivybridge CPUs

TBH with the latest i7 and 780Ti anything less than a Z97 is unwise IMO.

You also don't need a £550 graphics card for the current gen of games, really. Future proof though
