Both of those don't have a toolkit for OSX (unless I'm blind) I have found a video on how to do it but to be honest I looks like a facking minefield.

Are you on about your speaker volume or headphone?

If the speaker, then the issue is usually because some designer put the speaker on the flat back so when is on a surface, you're effectively muffling it

Well funny you should mention that Stuart! It would seem the volume control is limited somewhat using that strange knob (merc vito)

If the volume knob won't turn it up anymore, then rooting it or installing an app to boost it won't make much difference.

Cyanogen have released an app for Macs to enable the ulocking/rooting/recovery & ROM flashing. Use that then flash any ROM you want (unless you want CyanogenMOD of course)

You could install a custom kernel such as Faux, then use the companion app to boost the output:

I have done some further reading and apparently the volume from the Mercs aux is very low that said the iPhone is a lot louder.

This might help I suppose.
