Not sure thats 100% true of today's age.

Firstly people have built their alliances theses days weather it be controller related brand related or based on what mates are going to buy.

Plus the cost of owning both could be a mayor player here say if both go down the line of online based app stores.

Like I say, the "hardcore" fans will own both.

But as you rightly say the allegiance that people have built on a console will remain.

Slightly off topic being as it's about the Playstations in general I found it quite amusing.

Back in the day of the PSOne MS approached Sony and wanted to forge an alliance and co develop their console with the thinking that 2 heads > 1 head. At that point in time Sony were absoultely 100% dominant in the market so told MS to get bent. MS's reply was well f**k you then we'll develop our own console from scratch, and the Xbox was born.

Think you've got that wrong - it was the PS1 that came about after a failed alliance between Nintendo and Sony, with Sony brought in to work on Nintendos plan for some super disk drive. Sony continued their work and came about with the PS1, which in the eyes of many, changed gaming forever.

Fair point. I'd known about the Sony/Nintendo thing which brought about the birth of PS1, but never this battle between Sony and MS. If you read some of MS's own take on the birth of Xbox, they never mention this (no shock there). It seems these consoles all came about thanks to one firm telling another to f'off!

With EU law passed with digital sales there is no way the EU would even allow the console in with physical software not being sellable.
A German collective is setting up now to sue Steam again since that law was passed as they tried a couple of years ago and failed.

They'll just continue with the usual access codes which prevents multiplayer or locks out certain parts of the game. Doesn't prevent second hand sales, but a used game ends up costing more if you want the full game. Example, second hand game may save you £10 or so, but you'll have to spend an extra £15 to unlock the content to finish the game.

When you say stuff like that it reminds why I despise EA and DLC so much

Have EA done the Activision/Ubisoft thing of removing story based content yet? That's like taking pages out of a book or scenes from a film and expecting you to pay extra a month later. The whole practice stinks. Bring back old school gaming where £40 got you the full game, with all the characters, costumes, weapons and story together in one. You also unlocked cheats and the rest by playing the game, not by paying extra.

I'm not sure about that steam box

From what I understand there releasing 3 different units. "Good, better and best"

1 for $99 where you need a decent pc aswell
1 for $250 which is your 360/ps3 but better
1 for $300, can't quite work out what that is, they said its basically a PC yet the other two and sole purpose of steam box is to be like a console

whole thing looks an effort tbh and I just want to use a pad and no everyone else I'm playing is doing the same, not been at a disadvantage playing people with mouses etc

obviously if its a big success and I have a few bits wrong about it ill look into it depending on how much better the graphics are etc

Can't see the point when they've not even reached the peak of what the current hardware can do.

This, hence why I think the next gen push is more to do with having more control on gamers (more dlc, access codes, locked out second hand games) and less to do with actual advancement in graphics/sound etc.

They have though, majority of games cant do 1080p at 60fps, hardware cant handle it.
