I hoped somebody here who had same problem knows what syncro and parts do I have to order.
2nd syncro or 5-6th?
people have had synchros replaced and it hasn't solved the problem so i wouldn't go buying parts just yet...

I'll talk to some mechanics.
Exept syncros what other parts in gearbox can be bad?
THNX man for your replyes.
Car is great in summer but now It's annoying. When worm up its best gearbox but in winter it's a nightmare to me
My gearbox is a pig when cold and a beauty when warm - this means it is made to good tolerances which only set properly when the box has warmed, the oil has thinned and the internals have expanded etc.

Warm the engine and gearbox oils/casings/internals thoroughly before you intend to drive hard!

Replace oil.

Remember to warm your gearbox up before you expect to drive the car, this is not rocket science.

The car has been made to close tolerance throughout, including gearbox. Metals expand and contract in varying temps.

I am proud of the fact that i have to get my gearbox to operating temp before it will shift sharply, it means it has been made with performance in mind.

ideally the gearbox...and I say that because the parts needed to fix the fault and prevent further fault will amount to more than a staright gearbox swap....i.e...2nd gear synchro/5th+6th gear synchro plus labour.

synchros are freakin expensive parts to buy.

That's true I had my gearbox replaced by Honda due to damaged synhros (2nd, 5th and 6th) and even they said a new one would cost less than repairing the old one. Luckily i got a massive discount on parts and labour

but did it fix the box or was it still ropey?

It's a new gearbox so of course it fixed the problem :-D
My problem wasn't just a stiff or notchy gearbox - i couldn't select 2nd gear.

Ahh glad to hear it, you are lucky then, usually i have problems with 1st and 2nd and sometimes reverse. I've learnt to drive very gingerly when the car is cold by short shifting to 2nd and working the box too by going back to centre and then to 2nd, it all helps to avoid embarrasing crunches. Car was into the dealer about 6 times about this, they didnt replace the gearbox though..

Well i had been to a specialist transmission centre and got Honda to do their diagnosis as well.
So the only option i had was to get a new gearbox. My gearbox was really knackered.
Thankfully Honda UK sorted me out nicely as my car has a low mileage and was bought from a Honda dealer

So what's the best way to sort the 2nd gear issue? I noticed mine does it occasionally today. Doesn't seem to make any difference though from warm to cold?

Ok so after reading 5 years of posts, Im confused -

My car may need this so called 'Fix' As its a tad notchy when cold from 1st to 2nd,

Fine when warmed a little,.

So if I ring around a few dealers that are SURELY aware of the bulletin, They will most probably book me in, And maybe do the 'Fix'.. Then charge me what? FOC Recall style? OR £500?

Thanks for any advice in advance. Chrissy

if the car is out of warranty you will be charged labour for gearbox out, strip, rebuild and refit.. plus syncro's I would guess when is all said and done you will be at least at the £700 mark maybe pushing towards £1000.... (gearbox parts are very, very expensive)... if it is a real issue it would probably be cheaper to get a second hand box from a specialist and get them to swap out

Even if is it a recall... if you are out of warranty there is not a huge amount you can do about it.. altho you may get some discount from a dealer (if you are very lucky parts at cost price).. but this will still be very expensive

How much do second hand boxes usually sell for?

Does the 2nd gear issue get much worse than a slight crunch? ie. further down the road = not being able to even select 2nd?
