A few months ago my ep3 started knocking loudly on acceleration. As soon as this happened I ceased driving it and took it to my local mechanic, who seemed to think one of the con rod bearings could have gone. I have not driven my civic since, with aims of selling as spares etc. I've now decided to keep it, so I'm now trying to assess if this may be repairable or if a new engine would be required.

Has anyone had this problem? And what are your thoughts

Thanks in advance

Bottom end knock from the big end bearings can be a common failure on these engines depending on how it's been treated.
Without stripping you're not going to know how much damage there is. Some people have got away with not damaging the crank and just needing new shells. If the crank is damaged then the cost of a new/reground crank is generally the price of a second hand engine. But buying a second hand engine can be a risk not knowing it's history.
