This is how I feel - I've got used to the 2nd gear thing and if the problem just moves up the gearbox, or gets worse even I'll wish I'd just left it alone.

Sounds like its too hit and miss to be a propper fix at the moment.

I've had it done and I wish I'd left it alone.

All the hassle of taking the car in twice and the problem I had afterwards wasnt woth it.

I so wish I'd left it alone.

I've had mine done about 2 months ago, they even fitted my JDM LSD at
the same time (there was some hassle with the LSD installation but
that's a different story).

My gear work great now! 1 -> 2 is very smooth even when car is cold.
5 -> 6 was quite hard when I got the car from service but now it is also
quite good.

So I would say defo go for the fix! 8)

I took my car in to my local dealer and they "knew" nothing about this bulletin and when they took my car for a test drive the mechanic said that there was nothing wrong with it! I driven a few other ctr's and the gear change from 1st to 2nd is def way slicker and smoother than my 54 plate one. Whether this is due to the car not being run in properly (10,700 now) I dont know.
But so far my dealer has said that my gearbox will not be looked at because it is fine!
I guess I will wait until my 1st service and see how it feels after that.

Good luck getting it done  , most of them are like that. My dealer agreed there was a bulletin after I told him and he looked for it.

If they know nothing about it tell them to get there head out of there arse and look for it. Insist they phone Honda UK and check whilst you there. Fair enough they might not have seen it before but they will if they bother to look.

Sounds to me like you had the 5th and 6th synchro replaced. Thats the fix that seems to work.

For some reason I think my dealer replaced the 1st and 2nd syncho's. Which, for me, doesnt work.

Yep, the fix is to replace 5/6 synchro pack it causes drag and affects shifting with gears 1/2. Mine was one of the first to be fixed and then they replaced all synchros! At first shifting to 5th was difficult but now all gears work well.

I had mine done yesterday, I initially found the clutch to be alot stiffer and difficult to get into 5th gear. After a bit of driving around today, all now appears OK, but will continue to see what its like in the mornings.

To add to my above post, the gear changes are now really smooth including going into 5th.

Mine's done 4000 miles now. It has improved from when I first had it, probably through a combination of things bedding in and higher temperatures as we approach summer, but still feels notchy and stiff (when cold) for 1st to 2nd gear changes.

Went to see the dealer today. They aren't aware of anything from HUK, but have suggested that they road test the car from cold so they can see what they think. Car booked in for next week - will let you know how I get on.

Well after initiating this post mine is now much better :D .I had the fix done but the box couldnt have quite been re-assembled 100% and they have had to strip the box again and very carefully put it back together and its now sorted.

has anybody had this fix done at Grantham Honda, Francis Honda (Narborough) or any Avonvale?
or recommend any of them, as i find it quite difficult to put into gear (1st and 2nd) when cold. and there's usually a little crunch as it goes into 2nd :(

thanks.

I had to have mine done at Francis and its still not 100% but i would recommend Grantham as that was my first choice given Dave , one of the technicians, actually owns a ctr and has performed the fix succesfully on his own car.

Honda test ran my car this morning, and they reckon how mine behaves is pretty 'normal'. I guess that means putting up with it for the time being.

If it gets much worse again when the weather gets colder, then I'll get them to have another look. First service will prob be December or January, so that might be an ideal opportunity.

Cause i had a third party warranty with my ctr being an import and this was the garage they used for all there warranty work.Tried to get them to let me use Grantham but as Francis gave them a discount on labour Grantham couldnt match their quote.Whereabouts in Leicestershire are you?

I've just registered to this site and am new to all the Type R problems. I had noticed all the mentioned problems with my 2002 9k second hand car. It is under warranty until october and i want to know all the problems and fix them before it ends. I am aware of the "bearing noise" and the tyre wear thingy. I am having my alloys renewed under warranty and I had noticed second gear was a bit clunky in the cold mornings. What do i do with the second gear problem? I want to be armed with all these faults before i go to my dealer. Luckily I know the storeman and so i have a wee bit more leverage than some. This sight has been a real eye opener!
