Hi guys.

I have an ep3 type r. It's covered 96k and had a new clutch fitted October last year. I went on a long trip over the weekend and its developed a sort of grinding noise from below the air box. When the clutch pedal is depressed it goes away but in neutral or in gear I can hear the noise. It's also started jumping out of 3rd on the way down and intermitantly wont go in on the way up...

Any ideas?

Common misconception - it is probably the gearbox input shaft bearing and the reason the sound goes away is you disengage the gearbox from the engine when you depress the clutch and the gearbox input shaft stops turning. If it was the clutch release bearing it would make the noise when you depress the clutch. Coupled with the other problem the recommendation that you get it looked at by a specialist is sound.
