Hey, new to the forum!
im ash, got my ep3 around 6 months ago and have been a member of TRO but thought i'd pop on here aswell
bought the car standard with images below

Pulled a 199.3 bhp (with an ITG induction kit) although not quite 200, its not bad considering their 198hp from factory




Old alloys were SHOCKING, the previous owner did an amazing job of kerbing them

10k is too blue mate, OEM is 5k and recommended is 6k

yeah agreed, to be honest i've never had HID's before and loved the look of the bright white lights with a hint of blue, next time im going for either 6 or 8k learn from my mistakes

I've had a few guys pm me over my headlight conversion and how i did it. I figured i might as well put a how-to on here as i have one on type-r-owners.co.uk already. Here it is:

Pre-facelift to Facelift Headlight Conversion
This isn't really a how to guide, more of a collection of photos and guides that i used for my conversion.

To start with, i followed this guide:

it explains what parts you need for the install, i didn't completely follow this guide, first of all, i was on a slightly lower budget and opted for an ebay job for this i bought a pair of facelift headlights (£120 posted), i then bought a set of H1 bulbs, HB3 bulbs, and a pair of silvatec indicator bulbs. 1 thing i did feel was necessary are the bulb holders for the H1 bulbs and the indicator bulb holder which i bought from my local honda dealer for around £25.

Now that i had this ready, i needed the plugs to connect them with as the preface uses different plugs. To do this i went to my local breakers yard and scavenged the plugs. Here is a picture of the 2 plugs i grabbed:


You will need 2 of each (a pair for each side).
I spent hours looking in the breakers yard, and is really a needle in a haystack but i will give a pointer, most BMW's i found used the HB3 connectors (the big plug in the picture) and so there was a lot to choose from, the indicator bulb holder plug however was a mission. I actually found it completely pointless looking at headlights and side repeaters as i checked well over 20 cars. I actually found them in the old style (1997) corsa's. There was 1 per car, and was behind the rear driverside light.

Next to remove the bumper, follow any thread on the forum, these pictures might help:


undo poppers 8 on top, 4 underneath, unscrew 2 screws underneath (1 at each end) and finally in the wheel arches 1 screw holding the bumper to the wing.


prise the bumper away from 1 corner

keep prising until the bumper comes off.

next remove the headlight by unscrewing the 4 nuts labeled here:


the arrowed nut is actually underneath and is quite tricky to get to and undo

i then followed this diagram:


This diagram is amazing, if you follow it, it will work. Using a relay and a fuse holder with a 10 amp fuse, wire up the new headlights and plugs.

Thats it! looks a lot better now, and cost around 150 pounds for me with around 2-3 hours installation. The reason it took so long was to get my head around the wiring. Its something that the first time will take absolutely ages but second time will take an hour.

Nice work there mate. Do you know you can just buy some different temp HID bulbs from ebay for less than a tenner? No need to buy a new kit, just need H1 HID bulbs from china/hong kong at your preferred colour temp and also make sure the wattage is correct too.

I had 6000 kit which started to turn it bit 4300 so I bought a new set of 8000 bulbs. Prob should have stuck with 6000 to be fair though but the blueness is quite nice.

i didn't know that, i thought that each bulb set works with its ballast, didn't know i could just buy the bulbs

i think my camera makes it look a little too shiny
will be a few more pics soon, alloys being sprayed hopefully in the next couple of weeks

where abouts did you get your piper system from?? so far 600 is my lowest from abp motorsport :/

Brand new with a sports cat thats what your going pay unfortunately,havent seen anywere other than ABP doing them.
They dont come up second hand often either and if they do its usually with a decat.

What colour you doing your alloys?

Did you put the 2.5 midpipe after the dyno then?

alloys will be sprayed a darkish anthracite, red honda logos and red rim tape (possibly)

and yea pulled the 199 before the b-pipe [smilie=karls_thumb.gif]

want an idea of how the rims will look,check my build thread as ive had mine done dark anthracite and red badges

With a milano car, i think they will look brilliant

how have your alloys held up ?? im hoping the respray will last a long time

held up really well mate,they taken a beating over the winter and currently with the ice/snow but no problems what so ever,i try get wax on them as often as i can and i put a couple coats on at start of december and i only got to wash them down last week! and they come up as good as new.

i got them done at the wheel specialists,full refurb and powdercoat,there a bit more expensive than some places but definately worth it as they do a great job and were very friendly :bigthumb:

can't wait now, it will really transform the cars looks, tomorrow im also respraying the rocker cover tomorrow pics will be up shortly....
