Been hanging around here for a while but due to funds havent been able to do too much with my ep3 yet.....
shes a high miler but that didnt put me off too much as I get her for a good price last may and with fhsh I knew it would be a good un,
Paint fade was a bigger issue than I'd first realised but I have a couple of plans to hopefully overcome this.

The first mod was to do as most people do and replace the airbox with an open cone
after reading all the nonsense that K+N had to say, 'gauranteed horsepower' etc etc. I went for one of these courtesy of demon tweeks in wrexham

A trip to TDi north for a dyno run or two. The idea being to get a base figure before I ordered my Kpro. I also had the idea of testing the K+N against a hondata modified airbox. here are the graphs, a bit hard to see but here they are:
So this is the better of the two. 216bhp with healthy torque figures too. Guess what, this is the modded airbox run
heres the graph showing the results of the K+N typhoon. 212bhp and noticable drop in torque too. We ran this a few times and the results got worse and worse due to heat soak.
So all in all good gains with a cat back and modded airbox. This spurred me on to order the kpro, but without the funds for an RBC or exhaust header there wasnt much point so the plans went on hold for a while.

Impressive gains from just a few breather mods :bigthumb:

I know. My thoughts exactly. Once I'd put the standard air box back on I couldn't believe the difference. The noise from an open cone can really screw up your perceptions

How many miles have you got on the clock?
You still planning on going down the kpro route?

the cars high miles with 125,000. Im going for Kpro but just trying to source an rbc in the next couple of weeks, then an exhaust manifold then hopefully get my car kpro'd by TDi north around may/june. I am a bit wary of the high miles so dont want to go overboard with the engine mods but with the engine producing good figures already I'm assuming the engines condition is pretty good

I think that kind of power is spot on dude, that's what i've got planned. Sure 250bhp doesn't really put any kind of stress on the engine at all. :bigthumb:

So the suspension was next on the agenda. I spotted a set of eibach pro street coilovers for sale in the ads section on this forum. The advert said that there was a broken spring but apart from that everything was there and in working condition. The guy didnt live a million miles away so I took a trip out to warrington. I met the bloke and he could talk for britain! I was due in work and it looked like i was going to be late so, my usuall trusting self, i didnt open the box to inspect instead handed over the money and headed home...
Opening the box the next day I thought I was having a nightmare. No bumpstops, no sandwich plates, a missing helper spring and on top of that a seized damper.
Got on the phone to Eibach uk who promptly told me the dampers couldnt be rebuilt and Id have to order a new one with the part numbers they'd supplied through a dealer. Demon tweeks helped out again, a new spring and damper assembly was £250 so the deal was still looking ok. A few days later the springs and damper turned up only to find they'd sent the wrong corner! No problem they said bring it back and we'll order you the correct side. Two weeks they told me because it had to come straight from germany as Eibach UK had no stock. No biggie as I hadnt ordered my camber arms at that point anyway. From then on every monday morning for over eight weeks demon tweeks would ring with 'just to let you know your damper will be another week' Argh, production problems in germany etc etc. Anyway finally here and looking sweet
the old!
the new!

So the coilovers were set now I just needed the camber bolts and arms
Ordered d2 arms courtesy of funky power
I know theres a lot said about the quality of the D2 items but they have replaced the main body of the arm from aluminium to steel so there shouldnt be any question of strength any more. At about £80 odd they are a bargain compared to the JDM options too. Worth bearing in mind for those people on a budget like me!
I ordered the camber bolts because I am short of an eccentric bolt for one of the front dampers. On inspection they didnt fit and I am still short of a bolt. No problem said ABP as they said OEM bolts do the job in the elongated bolt hole. Not too sure of this so Ive sent demon tweeks on a mission to see if they can source an original eccentric for me. Camber bolts sold to typerfern, cheers!
Anyone know where I can get an eccentric bolt from? over a week now and demon tweeks have come back with nothing...

Once you get over 100k on a K20 you actually make more power, everythings running all loosey goosey baby.

haha, 'its only just run in' and all that. I remember hearing from someone in the far and distant past that an engine runs as sweet as its ever going to, just before it pops!
