bondyboy wrote:Despite me having the car for over three years now I've still not done a “build” thread, better late than never . . .

I bought the car in May 2008 from a private seller on here (Clazzer), it was a long 2 hour drive to pick it up but took less getting it back

The previous owner had looked after it well; he had a big file with receipts galore in their own little poly-pockets, how-to guides and advice from forums etc. I was shocked at how much he had spent on it over the years, little did I know the modding addiction that awaited me.

When purchased it had the following spec:-
SUSPENSION
Rear Koni Gas Adjustable Sports Shocks
Front & Rear ABP Motorsport spec sports lowering spring kit
Front Ingalls camber adjuster bolts
Rear Ingalls camber adjustable suspension arms
Front E-TEC wide bar alloy strut brace
Rear Lower DC Sports Billet Tie Bar
ABP Fast Road Geometry Set Up

WHEELS & TYRES
18" TSW Catalunya with 215/35zr18 Yokohama Parada Spec 2's

BRAKES
Front & Rear Goodridge stainless steel areoquip brake hoses
Front Red Stuff Ceramic Pads
Front Tarox G88 40 groove discs

ENGINE/PERFORMANCE
ABP Magnex Stainless steel single box cat back 6x4 Oval tailpipe
K&N Typhoon
Neuspeed short shifter kit
TP Earthing Kit - red

COSMETIC UPGRADES
DC Sports red alloy billet gear knob
DC Sports red alloy billet oil filler cap
Dc Sports alloy billet battery tie bar
Spoon resivour socks
K&N Breather filter
PIAA front wiper blades
PIAA led side light bulbs
Silvatec indicator bulbs front & back
High intensity headlight bulbs
Rear Infinity speakers
JDM Red Mats - New in April 2007
Ultralight Carbon Fibre Plug cover
Ultralight Carbon Fibre Inlet manifold cover
Tints all round

Shortly after getting the car I found rebel motorsport club and went on a drive:-
Image

As you can see it had a fair few mods already and I was well happy with my purchase, I quickly added some cosmetic mods (more later) and after a good clean these are a couple of the photos from its 1st photo shoot:-
Image

Image

The first upgrades were added security (shh it's a secret), JVC stereo, Hertz speakers front & rear and an amp to be able to actually hear the music while driving ;)
Image

I also personalised the interior:-
Image
Poor photography sorry but it shows the little Yoda (that used to contain sweets) I've had on my car dash since the Phantom menace came out in 99 and the Buddy Christ (of Dogma fame) I planted on the dash - as an agnostic atheist I'm hedging my bets there ;) Also in the above pic are the “carbon fibre” JDM door sills

Added a tasteful Wales flag to the rear:-
Image

Clean engine bay:-
Image
New items added are the Spoon Radiator cap, Tenzo-R oil cap as the DC Sports one was pink and didn't fit with all the other reds in the bay (Tenzo-R one doesn't work either)

Image
Spoon JDM sexiness

I removed the CIVIC and Union Jack from the rear, added a CivicType-R.co.uk transfer under the rear wiper and smashed on some JDM Deflectors:-
Image

I stayed quiet on the mods for a while then only changing the brake pads to Ferodo DS2500's.

One of my favourite pictures and bit of road, shame it's not better quality but I think it was taken on the move:-
Image

But it didn't take long for me to start spending again, new Skunk2 rear LCA's for bling purposes (although they are about 30% lighter):
Image

Although initially liked the wheels I soon learnt the error of my ways and added some BuddyClub P1s which were just under 2kg lighter a corner than the TSW's they replaced (they were very kerbed but I figured I'd refurb)
Image

Image

Rebel then hired out this place in a little village called Pontrhydfendigaid, we call it "The Bont"; it's a tarmac rally stage on the side of a farmers hill in deepest darkest west Wales – turned out to be an excellent weekend, the 1st of many
Image

Another Rebel event, this time at Kemble airfield
Image

I then got it in my head that I needed a little extra power and had my sights set on a GruppeM and DC exhaust, but figured I'd might aswell do all the breathing mods together so bought a 2nd hand DC Manifold and exhaust, RBC from America, Tein springs, JDM rear ARB, Energy Engine Mount Inserts, SFS intake hose and a GruppeM from CPL.

Booked her in for 2 an a bit days work at TDi North, while there they sorted my dodgy suspension ( I had koni rear shocks and standard front shocks with ABP springs) they installed oem rear shocks with the Tein springs and gave it their FRSU, plus the obligatory Kpro and tune

I added a bit more engine bling in the form of new Skunk2 socks (black n red), sprayed the fuse cover pearlescent red with a Hondata transfer, removed the bonnet soundproofing to allow space for some more transfers, and save weight of course

Dyno at Tdi:-
Image

I must say that the upgrades made a hell of a difference, finally got some usability when not in VTEC – it was like a whole new car ;)

Whilst out on Halloween some kids must have taken a disliking to the VTEC YO! And decided to egg my car when I was on a dual carriageway (good shot tbh) needless to say the butter like Honda paintwork did not appreciate it:-
Image

I think these were from a set I took after the cars 1st full clay bay, glaze, wax, and sealant session, sorry for the driveway pics – I did take it out for a location shoot but the light was dying
Image

I had a well developed OCD for cleaning the car by now, some of the products I use:-
Image

As you may have noticed the rocker cover was letting the engine bay down, cue a few pm's to brenscivic to spec a custom cover in red fading to black, he fitted at Japfest 2010:-
Image
Naked K20 ;)

Image

Image
All done, nice n shiney but the oil cap still didn't work

Had also added some little red arrows by this time, pointing to the tow hooks underneath - I know, I know, pointless but it does add something to the front
Image

Then at rebel motorsport dyno day at GotBoost I had hoped to get a independent reading as Tdi's is know to be a bit generous
Image
Although it didn't work out that way as they failed to get a realistic reading despite trying on two separate occasions
Image
Max bhp 327? I wish

I fancied changing the wheels, I wanted to go down to a 17 inch rim as 18 inch tyres were too expensive and knew that the handling should be improved with OEM size, but I liked the buddyclub style so scoured CTRO for the same ones but smaller. None came up for sale, I'd seen a few go over the months but when I wanted them there were nowhere to be seen – until eventually a set came up in north Wales, they weren't the colour I was after but I would refurb them as I like, but on arrival at the sellers house they were mint so I couldn't do it to them

Image
I never intended to have white wheels, but they've grown on me

The wheels came with 2 Yokohama S306's and 2 Michelin sport tyres, the Michelin were borderline illegal with a lot of melted rubber probably from a track session so had to be changed, put 2 Yokohama parada spec2's on (these were going to be my summer wheels so the paradas dislike of puddles wasn't that important). Haven't got any pics from the time, I spent most of my time cleaning the wheels of all the brake dust the ferodo's would chuck out – I needed a pad with less dust...

Image
These bad boys were not only full of JDM win, but they produced significantly less dust and the bite from cold was massively improved over the Ferodo's. I repainted the callipers and applied type r decals, haven't got a shot of them which is surprising as I spent the entire weekend painting them

I was soon back on the track with Rebel once more, this time Llandow.
Image

Strange wheel combination due to varying weather conditions, I took both sets of wheels as I only had two “wet” tyres in each set. I had also swapped the pads back to the more track orientated Ferodo's, just as well really because on my last session I overdid it a bit and this was captured. . .
Image

The car picked up it's 1st injury when it was violently assaulted by a kid on a bike; the kid came flying down a hill of a side road that joins the road I was travelling; I saw him with a look of terror on his face and I knew he couldn't stop, I broke, came to a stop just as he piled into the rear passenger quarter! Thing is if I hadn't seen him or realised he was in trouble and I continued as normal he would have gone behind and missed me, as it was I couldn't risk him turning the other way and me possibly running him over proper.

I attach my reconstuction of said event rather than try to describe it all:-
Image
You can't see the camber going on there but the road I was on is a small but steep hill, the side road on the angle also slopes down

Results:-
Impact on skirt
Image

Dent and Scratch
Image
Was not happy, it happened on a Friday as I was coming home from work, the planned weekend of car detailing action was off - my heart wasn't in it :(

A holiday with copies of Japanese Performance and Banzai had re-alightened the modding urge in me and it was not long before I was ordering parts again, this time with handling in mind. Bought a Team Mfactory LSD, Exedy stage one clutch kit, BuddyClub N+ Coil-overs and RCA's, SuperPro Bush set all round with increased caster – not much then
Image

Image

With authentic translation error, reading it with an accent you can see how it would have happened, it's for these sorts of gems that I read motherboard manuals
Image

Luckily for me I had been recommended a Honda specialist Lyn had just discovered that wasn't 150 miles away, it was local at 15 miles woot! No more trips to TDi

Mike and Kris at R-Motion certainly know their Hondas and are happy to talk to you all day long about your car, it was booked in for best part of a week to get all of the above parts fitted.
The gearbox would go to their specialists to have the diff fitted and they would soon have their hands full trying to get all the bushes off a 7 year old car.

** Mike said then had taken pictures during fitting, I must askthem if they still got them and will up if they have

I had the car back just in time for Rebel Llandow round 2, with the clutch suitably worn in it was time to give the mods a test
Image

Again it was like a whole new car, the pull out (and in) of the corners was a revelation, the whole package would see me doing 110 by the time I had to slam on the anchors instead of 100 as it was previously – I also had my goPro by this time and was eager to test it out

[/youtube]
The diff does it's job too well at the end of the 2nd video and catches me out - just as well its out on track, think I hit a cow-pat or two, better than a lampost or a wall

My mods are done for now (still paying for the last lot) and have been enjoying the car out on track with another visit to Llandow and another Rebel weekend at Bont – after 3+ years of ownership it still puts a smile on my face

Also I have those brake pads, brilliant pads.......glad to see some else who doesn't rate the Ferodos, never liked them myself.

I got those pads after seeing your post about them for low brake dust, I pm'd you to find out where to buy them :salut:

Ferodo's are good for track, when they're up to temperature they are fantastic and never fade, but on the road when cold it's a different story

Lovely looking and sounding car :bigthumb:

Had so much fun chasing you around Llandow back in March, not to mention the weekend at the Bont and our little drives, we will have to sort something out again soon :-D

How both our cars have change since 2008... top job :bigthumb:

Awesome i thought the quality wasn't from any other action camera, I don't personally have one but alot of mates do as we use them alot for headcams of different tracks and edits for my riding. Mate has just got a motorsport mount so will be trying it out soon! :bigthumb:

Yeah the motorsport mount (big suction jobbie) works a treat and was used for all the external shots - I still cable-tied it secure though, didn't trust it

cheers honda smartie dude

the engine bay was pretty spotless when I bought it so was easy to keep it up really, although it does look very different to how it was

I have had a guy on the forecourt call his kid out to look at the "shiney" engine while I was checking the oil, when he had left a copper knocked the window and we spoke about honda's for a while (he had a mugen)

the gunmetal are  but you don't see any close up shots for a reason, they were kerbed to buggery when I picked them up and have since bubbled and flaked away something awful (the cooking they got on track can't have helped)
