Hondata mod versus open cone. DEFINITIVE ANSWERS!

Thanks to Ben and Neil at tdi north today, we had a bit of an experient using my ep3 and came up with some interesting conclusions
My car has a trust cat back and nothing else, no header or manifold or kpro/k100
all runs were conducted with the bonnet shut
We had two runs using a modified oem airbox and oem air filter
Run 1. 216bhp at around 6800rpm
Run 2. 217bhp at around 6900rpm
The next two runs were using a three month old typhoon kit which had covered around 1500 miles tops
Run 1. 215bhp at around 7500rpm
Run 2. 212bhp at around 7900rpm
So you can see definitively with the cone filter, the car is losing chunks of power. I think if we'd done more runs with the cone the figures would have steadily worsened.
Ben couldn't email me the graphs because he had no memory stick but he's sending them to me tomorrow so I will post them up.
I have argued for the k+n in the past so it's been a placebo effect kicking in because of the noise levels and the feeling of a much more aggressive crossover. The aggressive crossover is in effect because the car was running poorly low down which accentuates the 'on cam' feel of the car
I still love the k+n for the sound track but guess what, the oem box is back on and k+n is shortly going up for sale. Like I said, can't be beaten for sound but if your chasing figures then it's no good
Discuss :shouldbeinteresting:

Anytime I mention the subject a debate seems to start rumbling. Thought I'd just try and put a technical edge on it

Nice to see a test done tbh. Have been trying to tell the typhoonfags for years but they wouldn't believe us...

This is it mate. Many people would argue for and against but had little in the way of figures to back the claims up. Puts my mind at ease now anyway

So peak power is 1k rpm higher?
Also dyne runs dont take into account the air flow from underneath the car etc blah blah I don't care really I've still got my AEM V2 on as I can't tell the difference and it sounds awesome

true mate but as a like for like test the numbers say it all
and yeah the power was right at the top for the cone which was just another reason it came off my car, yes nice to feel the car pull right up to the limiter but on a day to day basis this is just no good for me. I do already miss the soundtrack though, but I have my trust system for company at least

It's a forum. Things get debated about in a forum.

Good post.
Doing the airbox mod did you get the air intake pipe to the grill aswell?

just kept the original caf, didnt have time to source a larger diameter pipe, but to be honest Im sticking with that too. The car made excellent gains anyway

firstly id like to say well done for doing the test as its something noone ever does!
however i have a gripe with the testing as mentioned about this was done on a standstill with the bonnet closed, i think this would have effected the figures alot in terms of 'loss' cannot wait for the graphs though
id like to see this method exactly the same way testing wise(bonnet down) with the AEM CAI, TM/GM and see the back to back testing

I'll have the graphs posted ASAP but thy haven't been forwarded on to me yet. I agree with your gripe to a degree but its about as close as were going to get!
