Take a look at my thread topic here

In my own opinion all this intake talk is really only of any point if you are actually going to go far with mods on your car like Kpro/k100 and manifolds etc. I really can't see much point in sticking a £350 intake on a standard CTR is it really going to make that much of difference for you??

With the cones against other intakes I really can't see how people notice a couple BHP difference.
With any intake there will always be variables gruppe m sits in the engine bay despite where the air gets passed through its still in the engine bay and will be prone to heat soak might not be as bad as the kits which arent enclosed but if its in the engine bay it will get hot

chris wheela wrote:So peak power is 1k rpm higher?

Also dyne runs dont take into account the air flow from underneath the car etc blah blah I don't care really I've still got my AEM V2 on as I can't tell the difference and it sounds awesome :)
true mate but as a like for like test the numbers say it all

and yeah the power was right at the top for the cone which was just another reason it came off my car, yes nice to feel the car pull right up to the limiter but on a day to day basis this is just no good for me. I do already miss the soundtrack though, but I have my trust system for company at least

If your not bothered about peak power etc why even modify the standard airbox?

I've got a perfect condition oem airbox and filter

Evo360 wrote:Thanks to Ben and Neil at tdi north today, we had a bit of an experient using my ep3 and came up with some interesting conclusions

My car has a trust cat back and nothing else, no header or manifold or kpro/k100
all runs were conducted with the bonnet shut
We had two runs using a modified oem airbox and oem air filter

Run 1. 216bhp at around 6800rpm
Run 2. 217bhp at around 6900rpm

The next two runs were using a three month old typhoon kit which had covered around 1500 miles tops

Run 1. 215bhp at around 7500rpm
Run 2. 212bhp at around 7900rpm

So you can see definitively with the cone filter, the car is losing chunks of power. I think if we'd done more runs with the cone the figures would have steadily worsened.

Ben couldn't email me the graphs because he had no memory stick but he's sending them to me tomorrow so I will post them up.

I have argued for the k+n in the past so it's been a placebo effect kicking in because of the noise levels and the feeling of a much more aggressive crossover. The aggressive crossover is in effect because the car was running poorly low down which accentuates the 'on cam' feel of the car

I still love the k+n for the sound track but guess what, the oem box is back on and k+n is shortly going up for sale. Like I said, can't be beaten for sound but if your chasing figures then it's no good

Discuss :shouldbeinteresting:
Glad youve done this mate!i can finally shut a few of my mates up who seem to think sucking it hot is good for the cars performace ! :salut: :salut:

OEM airbox with drop in filter is the way to go. I've tried open cone filters on various cars over the years and always found the car felt quicker with standard. The loss of torque and drivability with open filters was most noticeable for me. Also caused pinking on certain cars. Only 'induction kit' worth buying is throttle bodies ;) even then these can cause power loss if not set up properly or intake manifold is poor design. Money is better spent on suspension, brakes and exhaust (in that order). Still, young lads like the noise and I can appreciate that.

What filter was in the oem box? Stock or uprated?
As for airflow argument, as already been said, there's huge fans blowing air in.
As for the comment of only 1bhp difference not noticeable. 1bhp at 1krpm lower, with much better power and torque curves. In reality a much bigger difference than 1bhp.

no, read it again, it is a much bigger difference than 1bhp, wheat you do is you take that 1bhp, multiply it by nothing, then magic happens and you have so much more than 1bhp, but still only 1bhp :salut:
