What do you currently have and what would you recommend?

Distance between the tv and sofa will be about 3m.

3m is a big gap so I'll say 50". We have 42" with about 2m gap and it's about right.

I was thinking a 46 would be perfect but the panasonic ST50 has no 46" size anymore. Only 42", 50" and something bigger.

Ive a 46" Samsung and the distances between it and the majority of the seating in my flat is approx 3m. I would say its about right.

46in here too, probably about 3m away, 50in would be too big for my room and the TV I wanted was only available in 40 or 46.

Those extra 6 inches make all the difference.

Just measured  sofa is 3.5m away, 40" TV, not really felt the need to get a bigger TV though whenever it breaks we will.

Never felt the need for a massive TV, the current one is only 32" but anything much bigger wont fit on the wall where it is.

I used to work on the principle that the TV only needs to be big enough for the news readers head should be no bigger than life size but that was back in the days of CRT, it's easier with a flat screen.

I guess the 2 questions to ask are
1) Can you see the whole screen from where you are watching
and
2) Will the screen be too big for where you are putting it?
