The largest Civic Type R club forum

Established in 2002 it brings together people from all over the world to discuss their one love of Type R's.

We all move on at some point, get some help from our members on what to buy next. Usually a monster V8 or second hand Lambo will suffice but usually the three letters M P S will be muttered......standard!

Been there with thinking a diesel will save lot's of money. My last impreza averaged around 18-22mpg around town driving, had a 330d after and that averaged around 36mpg but it hardly made a diffrence in terms of saving money despite doubling the mpg. Sold that and bought another scooby, still no huge difference on fuel costs to make a saving, just feel better burning it

Why would it not free alot of cash if i get something cheaper though? Id save around £50/60 a month on insurance, £50ish on petrol, theres never CTRs in scrapyards so owt i need gnna have to get new, tyres have to be good ones £100 each or whatever they are... Just int cheap at all if it needs anything and once iv moved out i wont have much money each month to be buying expensive bits.

Im going keep it til jan and decide then.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Tyres, brakes, general maintenance is not a lot on a CTR. You can get decent mileage out of it, you can get a kids seat in the back, insurance will get better with age and no claims, last year I was paying £400 at 28, it's mega reliable and it can put a smile on your face.

Yeh buy the focus

How old is the ctr, whats it worth? I would see how you get on first before ditching the ctr, i honstly can't see the savings being that much to make a great difference tbh. trust i've been there with the diesel thing lol

I bought it for £4100 2 months ago but taxed it for year (£270) and MOTd it. 2004, 52k mileage, FSH, shud easily get my money back as it is maybe even a couple 100 profit i reckon.

I might do... We'll see. I see what ya all say about getting another car thats boring but i doubt ill be doing much driving other than to work and shops once babys born anyway especially while its really young so it'll just be an A to B car. And if owt like clutch went bet it'd be easily a grand to fix whereas in a focus or somet Would be a few hundred max.

I'll think about it.

Struggling to see why the clutch will be much more tbh, a garage should charge sililiar labour cost and the clutch's arn't expensive to buy either. I paid £600 about 5 year ago but that was all in at a reputable garage (more labour cost)

I've done nearly 110,000 miles in mine and clutch is still fine. It's labour charges that make clutch replacement expensive. In terms of parts and maintenance CTR's are cheap to maintain if you know where to shop. There are people on this forum that break CTR's regularly so any major parts can be had for a fraction of Honda costs. Only things to have gone wrong with mine in 8 years were:

2 Injectors blocked - £250 each from Honda but got a full set off the forum for £70 with half the miles mine had.
Idler pulley bearings dried out and started squeeling - Honda replacement is £40 and can be changed quite easily by yourself.
Changed front brake pistons and seals due to brake imbalance. Kit was £70 from brakeparts.
Sun visor sheared off - £7 off forum
I've had quite a few punctures but that would be the same for any car. Have a look in the wheels and tyres section for recommendations on decent tyres that don't cost the earth.
It's only ever not started once and that was only because I'd flooded it from only moving it 3 yards the previous day.
I've been told it will need a chain, tensioner and guides in the next 10,000 miles or so which will set me back around £600 but you could sell yours long before that. I would seriously do your sums properly before changing and if you still think you will save money then go for it.

Agree with the above. In terms of servicing/repair costs they are very good and not much more than a normal car if you shop around ect.

All my cars previous services have been done at TDI north, major one year minor the next.. Minors been around £100 majors been around £200. Do u lot do this? Or just take it to a normal garage and just get a full service for about £100? Dont think ill be taking it to TDI to be honest bit expensive lol.

Might keep it for a bit then and see how it goes once weve moved out with money because i do love it. Been trying to drive more normal since filling it up to see how it lasts when not giving it high revs all the time since putting the induction on lol.

There are many options for a service from a specialist, like Eight speed, I took mine there in the past.

Just listen to everyone and what they say, owning an EP3 is not going to cost you massive amounts more then a 1.6 focus. Keep it, see how it goes when the bubba comes along. The re evaluate
