FN2 gone, will be potentially selling the mrs' car too and having just one car.

What do people think of these? How is the reliability? What to look out for? Best diesel engine to go for?

Looking 2007 ish Audi A3's (S Line) or MK5 Golf's.

Really want a MK6 GTD Golf however they are out of my price budget atm!

Earlier ones had injector recalls. Although 9/10 times this would of been done.
Later ones (generally 2007 onwards) have a DPF and there's various sensors that do eventually go wrong and a few bits relating to the turbo but generally they're not going to break the bank to repair. Although if left faulty, you'll kill the DPF and you'll easily be looking at a repair bill with 4 figures.
Turbo actuator goes wrong. Although the A3 and the Golf share the same engine, VW list a repair kit, but Audi only list a complete new turbo. So best to get an independent specialist to supply just the actuator and get them to repair as some main agents will mug you for a complete turbo.

The 2.0tdi CR engine is apparently much more reliable than the earlier ones, but than came in with the mk6 golf, and facelift A3 and Leon around 2009.

Is the 140 bhp or the 170 bhp lump the one to go for? Which one would be more reliable?

I know nothing about these having only had k20s!

I've got an '07 A3 with the 170 engine and DSG.

I put on around 23k in the last 9 months, and bar servicing/tyres/new battery, it's not cost me a penny.

Wouldn't want to buy one if I was only doing short journeys however, I hear they don't take to it to well with the DPF.

The 140 and 170 are just as reliable as each other. Obviously the 140 will be better on fuel.
Short journeys don't do the DPF any favours. It'll need a cruise along a motorway every 1-2 weeks for it to regenerate.
Personally I'd avoid a DSG box. They're a superb gearbox, but additional servicing (oil and oil filter every 40k) and when they go wrong it's big big money. Plus it's a bit wasted on a diesel. It works far better on something like the GTI or the R32

I have the 170bhp cr engine in my leon. Had it for 6 months and very impressed with it.

As you no matey i made the change to the TDI, good car family wise and pulls well in the turbo. But they are a tad boring compared to the CTR but it suits my needs these days. On the plus side, it only costs £30 to tax a year and i only put £30 of diesel in her a week and get around 400 miles from that compared to nearly £60 in the CTR for only 300-320miles

My brother has a 2010 Sirocco 140 TDi. 140 wore thin quickly. He thinks he should've gone for the 170 in the first place. Go for the 170.

:lol:The tank is no were near empty when i fill up i just get used to it saying 400 and something miles on the miles before empty screen. The car averages around 57-59MPG most days when going to work, so it really isnt hard on fuel

It does vary between manufactures a little. Some tend to suffer worse than others.
My old dear has a BMW 120d, it's never driven on the motorway and spends most of its life hacking around back lanes and towns. It's never had a DPF issue. I'd guess it requires less strict conditions to regenerate.
From experience with the VAG stuff the DPF rarely blocks/fails. It's normally a component related issue that gives a fault.

Can't the DPF be removed along with the recirc valve?

I could be talking balldocks though, I've only had 1 diesel and that was an 1996 A4.

When did they phase out the 1.9 engine? I'm sure some years the VAG cars were offered with the 1.9 & 2.0 diesels

You can delete the DPF and EGR. It's more difficult on newer diesels compared to the early ones. By the time you've removed it, either pulled the insides out or bought a delete pipe. Then refitted and then remapped to suit. It's basically cost the same as just replacing the standard parts. The only gain is you'll never have a DPF issue and you gain more power. You'll then need to find a friendly MOT tester as recent rule changes would make it a failure to remove the DPF. Also you can get such a big gain in torque after removing and remapping that it ruins the clutch very quickly. So then you'll need an uprated clutch.
In short, it's more hassle then it's worth. Unless you want a fast diesel.

Best way to delete the DPF is use the original pipework and remove as much of the filter as possible. My local MOT centre told me this.

It will be used as the main car, even though work is only 10 miles away 5 miles or so is motorway, plus we will be using for longer motorway stints too so DPF shouldn't be an issue.

Would love an mk6 gtd but they are around 10k with around 100,000 miles.

At the moment I'm looking at mk5 golfs or 2007ish audis with the 170lump

what about an mk6 golf 140bhp? don't look as nice as the gtd but similar money to decent mk5 170's

Lovely cars, and good torque as standard, but easily remappable for more.
