Is it generally agreed that the problem with CTR's pulling to the right (or left) is down to a duff steering rack? I'm seriously considering buying one but reading that thread frightens me! I don't want to spend all my time wrestling with the car!!

no it's not....could just as easily be tracking or duff tyres....a faulty steering rack is usually paired with a loud creaking noise.

Injector Valves!

I bought my Type R about a month and a half ago and within a week the engine management light appeared.
Took it to the dealer and they had to replace an injector valve.

Then a week later the same happened with the engine management light and yet again another injector valve had to be replaced.

Tis fine now though!

Any ideas why this happened? Was it ragged before i got it? :-|

Watch out for front engine mount, common problem if not checked. Back one can go
aswell then it could snap your studs on your manifold as i found out from tgmsports-racing  lucky for me that had not happen, had an energy suspension mount fitted to the front as this was cheaper than the oem part & is a lot better  engine does not rock so much now :WOOT

Energy Suspension mounts are not proper engine mounts, they are only inserts - which is why a set of ES mounts is £30 and a single OEM mount is £115+. They sit inside the OEM mounts to stiffen them up.

Ok then, good thread - I'm looking to buy CTR at the moment to replace my MR2 turbo. What are the top few things that you would check when looking at this car - i.e. the things that are going to cost £££ to sort out if you miss? I'm used to JDM cars, and therefore the rattles that go with them  Its the obvious things that I may not know about yet that are a bit more car specific!

Quck question - is it worth coffin up the extra cash for a facelift model, whats the difference between the 2, i kno the lights are differerent but i read that the facelift model is faster due to a lighter flywheel and has better handling, is this true ?

Would the loud creaking noise be constant on a duff steering rack?

Just picked mine up recently - my steering makes a loud, 'clicking' knock when on full turn from the right hand side (it also gets quite heavy to turn). I am hoping it is just a new top mount rather then a steering rack. It has been diagnosed at service last year that a new rack was needed but I would of thought the noise/problem would of been constant if this was the case?

Don't fancy an expensive start to R ownership :???:

This thread is designed to answer some of the frequently asked questions when people are looking at a second hand CTR and also hints and tips, it is not designed as a helpdesk thread - so if you have a problem kindly post it in the correct section as a new topic, or better still do a search and find an existing thread as the chances are someone else has already asked your question or experienced your problem.

Thanks

Ahh this one thread is about the best Relevant(to me) ctr info I’ve read so far. I'm an Audi technician & 2 months ago bought me an 05 plate premier with just under 20k on the clock. I've plenty experience in fault finding with similar faults as have been listed in this thread & my car seems to suffers from a few of them   Here comes my take on it so far.

Steering pulling & self centring problems.

I feel my car pulls about the road slightly when driving @ slow speeds (30ish), not consistently following the camber of the road surface but it just has a wandering feel about it & when briskly pulling out a junction with a fare bit of steering lock on it doesn’t seem to centre properly. I have no noise from the steering & Tyre wear looks even enough. Both symptoms can be compensated for with steering input & are tolerable for now. I intend to do a full 4 wheel alignment on it myself then if needs be buy camber adjusters & line it up. Apparently Hondas factory alignment tolerances are pretty wild  ,if so all Ctrs should drive/feel better after an accurate full alignment.

Heat shield & intake manifold rattle.

The Silver plastic cover bolted to the intake manifold was rattling so has been removed for the time being. I still have the heatsheild rattle from cold, I've not looked @ that yet but I'm used to Hondas so just see that as being part of there character

Window Rattle.

My passenger window rattles its tits in only when it’s down part way, somebody wrote that this can't be fixed, I believe otherwise and will sort it when I get the time.

Dash rattles.

My Drivers air vent on the right side of the steering wheel rattles, this is even more annoying than the window & is on the "sort it when I get the time" list. The dash board seems to have developed a rattle from just left of the Radio area since the induction kit got fitted, this doesn’t bother me to much as it only happens when the intake noise changes on Vtec & frankly when that shits going down who cares about the rest!!

Knocking from front suspension.

My car has a knocking noise from the front suspension that happens occasionally @ slow speeds/town driving, mainly passenger side, It sounds just like strut tops or roll bar links/inner bushes. (another one for the list).

Road Noise.

There is alot of road noise/wheel bearing type resonating drone. This is a common complaint for cars with stiff suspension & low profile tyres, although it can be loud @ higher speeds it is normal.

End of the day I don't care too much about these niggles, I luv the car & Would recommend one to anybody.
I may update my list as & when I get round to sorting things.

Cheers Ewan
